A flash of helpless anger crossed her mind. Amelia felt like she had been sold out by her best friend. But since things had already reached this point, there was no reason to hide it anymore.
She took a breath and explained as calmly and honestly as she could. “We went to take pictures in the old town today. We ran into him there. Twice, actually. Just chance meetings. We didn’t really talk much.”
She instinctively kept one thing to herself—the plan to go out with him tomorrow.
After she finished speaking, she turned her face slightly away, avoiding Mason’s searching gaze.
But that small move didn’t escape his notice.
His long fingers suddenly reached out and caught her chin, firm and precise. He tilted her face back, forcing her to look at him.
Amelia had no choice but to meet his eyes.
His dark gaze was deep and sharp, filled with clear displeasure.
“You ran into him twice,” he said coolly. “And that was enough to exchange numbers?”
Then he added, “Is it because he looks a bit like Ethan?”
Amelia’s lips parted in surprise.
She hadn’t expected Lily to tell Mason that too.
Panic crept in at once.
“Mason, it’s not what you think,” she said quickly. “Yes, he looks a little like Ethan, but that doesn’t matter to me anymore. Not at all.
“I’m divorced from Ethan. So what if someone looks like him? He turned out awful anyway.”
But the harder she defended herself, the more it sounded to Mason like she was covering something up.
“Is that really so?” His brows lifted slightly. His tone was light, almost casual, but the weight behind it pressed hard on Amelia’s nerves.
In that moment, she felt it clearly for the first time. Mason was jealous.
The realization startled her. But right after that, a stubborn sense of unfairness rose up

her.
Why should he be jealous?

Yes, he had kissed her that night. That kiss was fierce and unforgettable–almost enough to pull her under.
But then what?
There was nothing after that.
They never talk about it. No definition. No promise.
He was still her brother, and Amelia was still officially single.
If she was single, then she had the right to meet anyone she wanted.
Besides, didn’t he have woman around him too?
Her lips pressed into a thin line. The defiance she had held back for so long finally broke free.
She looked straight into his cold eyes and spoke slowly, making sure every word was clear. “Mason, are you questioning me right now as my brother?”
His fingers tightened around her chin.
His eyes darkened instantly, like the sea before a storm–deep, restless, and full of dangerous undercurrents.
“So,” he asked slowly, each word heavy, “you think I’m sticking my nose where it doesn’t belong?” His voice dropped, cold and pressing, carrying a fearsome weight.
His gaze was terrifying. It was sharp and focused, full of an aggressive intensity that made it feel like he might swallow her whole.
The little bit of courage Amelia had worked so hard to gather collapsed under his stare. Like a balloon pricked by a pin, it lasted only a few seconds before it deflated with a soft whoosh.
Amelia grew timid.
She lowered her eyes. Her voice softened, tinged with a small, wronged complaint. “But … as your sister,” she said quietly, “that night I heard a woman’s voice on your phone. I didn’t even ask who she was.”
She thought backing down like this might at least soften him a little.
Instead, Mason only frowned slightly.

He looked at the top of her lowered head, as if trying to remember what she was talking about.
After a long moment, it seemed to click.
He released her chin and leaned back against the chair. His explanation was cool and flat.
“Amelia, that woman is a client Tim and I both know.
“Married for fifteen years. Her child started middle school this year. She’s 42.”
Each number landed like a small hammer tapping against Amelia’s heart. Not hard. But clear.
She could even picture it now. On the other end of the phone that night was not some mystery woman, but a sharp, capable, middle–aged businesswoman.
While her thoughts were running wild, Mason spoke again.
“Then why didn’t you ask?”
Amelia didn’t dare answer. Inside her head, she cried out helplessly.
Because I don’t have the right to ask!
She had tried to use the word “sister” to push back. He used the same word to trap her in a
corner.
This unclear, awkward bond between them was strange. Sometimes, it worked like a shield that let her act a little bold. Other times, it turned into a blade that cut her deeply.
The air in the room felt thinner by the second.
Being this close to Mason was torture. Every second felt too long.
His presence was overwhelming. So strong it made it hard for her to breathe.
At last, she couldn’t take it anymore. She reached out and gently pushed his solid arm. “Mason,” she said softly, “move over a little. You’re too close. I can’t breathe properly like this.”
Just then, the door swung open.
Tim walked in with a plate of fruit. He was smiling, relaxed, and cheerful. “We can have some fruit for now,” he said. “Lily’s still outside arguing with the restaurant owner. She insists they give us a free fish.”
