Chapter 346 Halfway Up

The mountain air was thin. As they climbed higher, the heat from moving got trapped inside Amelia’s thick clothes. She quickly felt stuffy and overheated, and her breathing grew fast and shallow.
“I–I can’t go on.” Amelia gasped. She grabbed the wooden railing and stopped, almost hanging onto it. “I need a break.”
Mason had been walking beside her the whole time. When she stopped, he stopped too. There was no rush or impatience on his face.
He reached up and took off her fuzzy hat so she could cool down. He held it in his hand and stood quietly nearby, waiting.
Leaning on the railing, Amelia looked at the stairs ahead. They seemed to stretch on forever. A wave of despair hit her.
Just then, a few older hikers were coming down the trail together. When they saw how hard she was struggling, they laughed kindly and cheered her on. “Come on! Keep going! The view at the top is beautiful!”
“That’s right! You young folks should have more energy than old people like us!”
Amelia felt a little embarrassed. She forced a weak smile and nodded at them.
When she looked back up at the winding mountain path, what little motivation she had left vanished.
She turned to Mason and looked at him pitifully. Her voice turned soft and pleading. “Mason, do we really have to go all the way up?”
Amelia looked like she had just run half a mile; Mason couldn’t help but laugh.
He pointed toward the base of the mountain, then at where they were standing now. Calm and matter–of–fact, he reminded her, “Amelia, you haven’t even finished one–tenth of the trail yet.”
Caught red–handed, Amelia instantly felt guilty.
She pouted and muttered under her breath, “You know I’m terrible at exercise.”
That part was true.
Back when she lived with them, Nora was big on fitness and health. Every weekend, she liked to drag the whole family out for hikes.

Every time, Amelia was the one lagging behind. She walked the slowest and was always the first to complain and give up.
And Mason always seemed to walk quietly behind her.
Thinking of that, Amelia lifted her head and suddenly stared straight at Mason, her eyes bright.
Mason paused for a moment.
When he saw her flushed cheeks and those unusually shining eyes, something stirred in his mind. He thought he understood what she wanted.
He raised an eyebrow, a knowing smile forming as he teased, “What? Why give me that look? You want me to carry you up?”
He was already prepared. If she nodded, he would squat down in front of her without hesitation.
“No!”
To his surprise, Amelia rejected him right away.
Not only that, she waved at him urgently. “Mason, move a little to the side.”
The smile on Mason’s face froze for a second. Confusion flashed in his eyes, but he still stepped aside.
As soon as he stepped aside, Amelia’s view opened up.
It was like she had discovered a whole new world. She excitedly pointed down toward the slope below.
“Look, Mason. Is there a coffee shop down there on the mountainside?”
Only then did Mason realize that he had completely misunderstood her.
He followed the direction of her finger. Sure enough, not far below, right at a bend in the mountain trail, sat a small wooden café.
It looked warm and welcoming. Thin white smoke drifted lazily from the chimney on the roof. By the door hung a wooden sign, handwritten, the words clear and bold in the sunlight.
Take a break. Do nothing.
To Amelia, the sign might as well have been glowing.
Was this really a café?

No. This was salvation. This was the promised land she had found at the edge of despair, a paradise designed just for someone like her, a total failure at exercise. A safe haven for the weak. A resting place for the exhausted soul.
Just a second ago, her legs had felt like they were filled with lead. Now, it was as if life had been pumped straight back into them. The fog in her head cleared instantly. Her breathing even felt easier.
She knew it at once. This was her paradise. She turned around without hesitation and spoke to Mason in a tone full of understanding and generosity. “Mason, why don’t you go ahead? You can meet Tim and Lily at the top. Don’t worry about me.”
Mason raised an eyebrow. He had noticed the dramatic change in her attitude, but he said nothing. He just looked at her, waiting.
She rushed to explain, sounding noble and sincere. “You should hurry up. Don’t miss the sunset because of me. The view from the top must be amazing. When you see it…” She paused, then smiled brightly. “Just take lots of pictures for me, okay? I’ll rest here and wait for you all to come back down.”
She spoke with such passion and self–sacrifice, completely unaware that her desire to slack off was written all over her face.
Mason’s lips twitched slightly.
In the end, he said nothing.
He simply took the fuzzy knit hat he had been holding and gently placed it back on her head, adjusting it so it sat properly.
Amelia took his silence and that small action as full approval.
Inside her heart, a tiny version of herself immediately set off fireworks in celebration. Victory.
“Alright, I’m heading out then!” she announced cheerfully.
The stone steps that had tortured her just moments ago, making every step feel like suffering, suddenly looked much friendlier. Even the climb itself didn’t seem so terrible anymore.
