Chapter 345 Wrapped Up Too Tight

Amelia zipped up her jacket. She said to Lily with relief, “Good thing I brought my thickest down coat. Otherwise, I’d be frozen solid.”
Lily looked her up and down and laughed. “You look like a big, clumsy teddy bear. Wearing all that, are you sure you won’t get hot when we start hiking?”
“I won’t,” Amelia said, shaking her head. “This keeps me warm.”
She would soon regret that confidence.
Amelia was dressed in so many layers that getting into the car became a struggle.
Mason was driving this stretch of the mountain road. He was already in the driver’s seat.
He watched Amelia from the side with clear amusement as she stood outside the passenger door, puffing and huffing. She lifted one leg, trying to step onto the running board, but the thick coat trapped her legs. She tried again and again but couldn’t reach. She looked like a penguin trying to climb a step. Awkward, but cute.
At first, Mason just watched in silence. In the end, he couldn’t hold it in anymore. A low laugh slipped out.
Amelia heard it clearly.
She froze, then shot him an annoyed look. Her cheeks puffed up under her scarf.
“Alright, alright, I’ll help you,” Lily said at last, unable to watch anymore. She leaned out from the back seat and gave Amelia a firm push from behind.
With that boost, Amelia finally scrambled into the passenger seat, clumsy and ridiculous.
After putting snow chains on the tires, the SUV moved smoothly along the snowy mountain road.
The mountain they planned to climb wasn’t far from the lakeside restaurant. The drive took a little over twenty minutes, but the scenery along the way was more than worth it.
Snow covered the pine branches, shining with tiny silver lights under the sun.
Amelia leaned against the window and watched the view rush past.
She sneaked a glance at Mason beside her. His profile was sharp and calm. His hands on the steering wheel looked steady and strong. He noticed her gaze. His eyes stayed on the road, but the corner of his lips lifted just a little.

The car stopped at a parking lot at the foot of the mountain.
Next to it was a wide field dusted with snow. Past the field was the edge of an icy lake.
“Wow! The lake!” Lily cheered.
She grabbed Amelia’s hand and ran toward the shore.
Most of the lake was frozen, smooth, and quiet.

Near the edge, the water hadn’t fully iced over. Under the sunlight, countless tiny ice needles floated on the deep blue surface, sparkling.
“So beautiful!” Amelia gasped. She squatted down, forgetting the biting cold. She reached out with her bare hand to touch the shining ice.
The moment her fingers hit the water, a sharp cold shot through her hand. She yanked it back like she’d been shocked. “Ow!” she yelped, hopping in place and clutching her fingers.
“Yikes! It feels like my hand just got stung by ice!”
Lily burst out laughing at the sight of her.
Just then, Mason’s tall figure stepped closer, casting a shadow over Amelia.
In his hand was a familiar pair of cream–colored knitted gloves, the ones Amelia had stuffed into her bag earlier because she thought they were a hassle.
Mason frowned slightly as he looked at her hands, now red and almost purple from the cold. “You put your hands straight into freezing water?” he said, clearly unhappy. “You want to ruin your hand?”
Before she could answer, he took her icy hand and wrapped it in his own warm palm. He rubbed it gently, trying to bring the warmth back.
Amelia let him do as he pleased. She muttered softly in her defense, “I just… I have no idea.”
When some color finally returned to her fingers, he picked up the gloves, opened the knitted opening, and carefully slid them onto her hands.
Amelia lowered her eyes and watched him put the gloves on her. Her heart felt like it was being held gently–warm, tight, and a little sore.
“All set,” he said. After putting both gloves on, he casually adjusted her scarf, pulling it tighter around her face so the wind couldn’t reach her cheeks as easily.

Not far away, Tim raised his phone at just the right moment and shouted, “Come on, look here! Photo time for the brand–new couple!”
Laughing and joking by the lakeside, they took a few pictures before finally heading toward the steps that led up the mountain.
The mountain wasn’t very high–just over 3,000 feet. It had well–built wooden walkways and stone steps, so the climb wasn’t difficult. Along the way were many hikers: lively groups of older people and young couples laughing and teasing each other as they walked.
When it came to climbing, Tim and Lily were perfectly in sync.
No one knew who started it, but the two of them turned it into a race. Before long, they had sprinted ahead, leaving Amelia and Mason far behind. All that remained were their energetic backs, disappearing around a bend in the trail.
At first, Amelia managed to keep up. Soon, her thick down jacket became her biggest burden.
