“Walking back to the camp looks far, but there’s a shortcut along the lake,” he said.
“It’s less than an hour. Let’s think of it as a walk after dinner.”
Hearing that, the small knot of frustration in Amelia’s chest melted away.
Being left behind was annoying, sure. But walking with him through the snow at night didn’t sound bad at all.
“Okay,” she said, smiling, and agreed right away.
They followed the path along the lake, heading slowly toward the camp.
The snow grew heavier. It drifted like torn cotton, spinning in the soft yellow glow of the streetlights.
After a few steps, Amelia’s eyes landed on Mason.
He was wearing a black cashmere coat that day. Mason stood tall and sharp, looking almost unreal against the snowy background, like someone out of a magazine.
And that was exactly why she started to worry.
That coat didn’t look nearly as warm as her thick down jacket.
She hesitated, then gathered her courage. Amelia stepped closer, walking half a step behind him. She opened the right pocket of her jacket, tilted her head up at him, and asked softly, “Mason, are you cold? Want to put your hand in my pocket to warm up?”
Mason stopped. He looked down at her.
Under the streetlight, her eyes shone brightly, filled with pure concern.
The corners of his mouth lifted despite himself. Still, he teased her on purpose. “Do you really think I’m as afraid of the cold as you are?”
Even as he said that, he naturally stopped walking.
He took the hand she had offered, wrapped it fully in his larger palm, and placed both their

hands into his coat pocket instead.

“This works better,” he said seriously, watching her surprised expression. Then he tightened his grip, took her hand properly, and started walking again toward the camp.
A wave of sweetness spread through Amelia’s heart.
She lowered her head and looked at their hands clasped tightly inside his pocket. She felt the light roughness of his fingers and the steady warmth of his palm. A quiet, settled happiness wrapped around her.
The streetlights stretched their shadows long across the ground.
Amelia looked at the road ahead. It seemed endless. Suddenly, a strong feeling rose in her chest, and she couldn’t help but speak.
“Mason,” she said softly, lifting their joined hands, “this road feels like it could go on forever. Do you think we’ll always be so good to each other, even in the future?”
Mason turned to face her. The streetlight behind him cast deep shadows across his sharp features, hiding his expression.
The hand holding hers tightened at once.
Snow continued to fall in silence around them.
After a long pause, he finally spoke. His voice was rough.
“Amelia Harlow,” he said her full name with care, “I’ve actually regretted something for a very long time.”
Amelia’s heart trembled.
He went on, “I regret that fight back then. I regret the awful things I said. I regret letting you go and letting you marry Ethan.”
His eyes locked onto hers in the dark, filled with emotions too heavy to name.
“Even though you liked him back then, I should’ve been more ruthless. Even if I had to drag you back and tie you up, I never should’ve let you leave.”
Amelia rarely saw him this open, this raw, almost rough in the way he spoke from the heart.
Without thinking, she rose onto her toes, wanting to smooth his tightly furrowed brow, wanting to hold him and comfort him.
But before her fingers could touch his cheek, two blinding white beams cut through the heavy

night, the familiar roar of an engine rising as it sped closer and closer.

The black SUV they had been waiting for swung in hard and stopped right in front of them.
The headlights made Amelia squint. They also lit up Mason’s face, now dark with clear displeasure.
The deep, emotional moment shattered in an instant.
The car door opened. Tim’s annoyingly smiling face popped out from the driver’s seat. A second later, Lily jumped out from the passenger side.
“Hey! Sorry to keep you waiting!” Tim called out, looking completely innocent.
Mason slowly let go of Amelia’s hand.
A cold, dangerous smile appeared.
“Tim,” he said calmly, his voice flat, yet somehow making the air feel colder, “I hope you’ve prepared a very good explanation. One good enough to convince me why I shouldn’t toss you into the lake.”
Tim felt a chill on his scalp but still forced a laugh.
“Hey, don’t do that. I was running an important errand for you!”
As he spoke, he suddenly reached into the inside pocket of his coat and pulled out two marriage certificates, flashing them in front of Mason and Amelia.
“Well?” Tim said proudly. “Is that explanation good enough for you?”
