Chapter 365 Too Hot to Handle

Countless thoughts battled in her head, leaving Amelia looking a little dazed.

More than once, Mason stopped in his tracks and turned back to check on her, and she almost walked straight into his chest.

Amelia, what are you thinking about?he finally asked in a low voice, stopping with her in a sheltered corner by a wall.

Huh? Oh, nothing,Amelia said quickly, shaking her head. Her eyes darted away. I was just thinking about how this place must have been very lively in the past.

Mason studied her for a long moment. His eyes were hard to read. In the end, he decided not to press further.

By evening, they had returned to town.

The weather changed without warning. The sky, which had been clear during the day, was now filled with fine snow. The temperature dropped fast.

It’s freezing,” Tim suggested. Let’s get some fondue. That’ll warm us up.

They chose a busylooking fondue place.

Inside, steam rose thick in the air. The smell of food mixed with loud chatter and laughter.

Amelia loved potatoes, especially the kind that was cooked soft and creamy in fondue.

She ordered a plate and watched the pot from the moment the potatoes went in. She stared at it like a foodguarding squirrel, holding her strainer over the pot. Every few seconds, she poked at the potatoes to see if they were ready.

Her focused, slightly silly look made Mason smile without realizing it.

Watching her struggle to scoop up the slippery potatoes, failing again and again, he let out a quiet chuckle. He calmly took the longhandled ladle beside him, dipped it into the pot, and neatly lifted out the potatoes, now slightly translucent from cooking. He leaned forward and placed them into her dipping bowl.

Here. Go ahead. Careful, they’re hot.”

As he pulled the ladle back, his long fingers brushed lightly across her wrist where her hand rested by the bowl.

It felt like a feather’s touchsoft, but burning.

Amelia froze.

She could clearly feel the skin on her wrist tighten, every nerve jumping at once.

Color rushed to her cheeks, turning them bright pink in seconds.

Of course, nothing escaped Lily’s sharp eyes.

Lily curled her lips into a teasing smile. Wow, this fondue is really hot,she said on purpose. The steam’s turning faces red. Amelia, you’d better be careful. Don’t burn yourself.”

That only made Amelia blush harder.

She knew Lily was teasing her. She felt so embarrassed she wanted the floor to swallow her whole.

Mhmshe murmured awkwardly. To hide her panic, sthe potato from her bowl, and shoved it straight into her.

The next second, sharp pain exploded across her tongue.

Amelia had burned herself badly.

Tears sprang into her eyes at once.

ckly lowered her head, grabbed uth without thinking.

She couldn’t spit it out. She couldn’t swallow either. Her face was scrunched up, looking both pitiful and funny.

How could you be so careless?Mason said, his voice full of concern.

He stood up right away and called to a server nearby. Excuse me. Could we get some ice, please? Please hurry up.

The server quickly brought over a small bucket of ice.

Mason slid it toward her. Hold it in your mouth.

Amelia felt like she had embarrassed herself all day long.

Especially in front of Mason. First, she had acted strange and gotten caught. Then, like a three- yearold who couldn’t control herself, she had burned her mouth because she was too eager to

eat.

For the rest of the meal, she barely touched her food. She sat there quietly with an ice cube in her mouth, head lowered, wishing she could shrink into thin air and disappear.

The plan for the night now felt like a distant joke, something she had once imagined but could never reach.

When they returned to the hotel, the snow had

grown

heavier.

The hallway was covered with thick carpet that swallowed every sound. It was so quiet it felt unreal.

At their doors, just before Lily and Tim went into their room, she walked over to Amelia. She gave her shoulder a firm pat and leaned in close, lowering her voice. Good luck.”

Tim watched from behind, completely confused. Good luck with what? You two have been acting real weird since this afternoon.

Lily turned back and shot him a dramatic eye roll. A secret between women. None of your business.

With that, she pulled Tim inside and swiped the key car

door closed. Amelia was left standing there alone, facing Mason and the closed door beside them, feeling as if she were about to face an enemy.

That one sentencegood luckdidn’t encourage her at all. Instead, it felt like the final push that crushed her already fragile nerves.

She felt pathetic. With her head down and her spirits sinking, she followed Mason into the

room.

The door shut behind them.

Mason took off his coat, brushing off a few snowflakes, and hung it on the rack.

The room was warm and cozy. He wore only a thin black wool sweater, the clean lines outlining his broad shoulders and narrow waist as he stood there, calm and composed.
