Holding up the still–open bag of gummies, she smiled brightly at Evan in the back seat and asked warmly, “Um… Evan, do you want to try some too? This flavor is really good.”
After being forced to play the invisible man the whole ride, and shoved full of public affection on top of that, Evan’s mouth twitched.
“No, Amelia.
“I don’t like sweets.”
The car slowly drove into the village entrance.
Dappled shadows from the trees fell across the road. Kaia, dressed in a white T–shirt and jeans, was already waiting there.
She was kicking small pebbles on the ground out of boredom. When she heard the engine, she looked up right away, her face lighting up with a bright smile.
“Amelia! You finally made it!”
The car doors opened. Mason got out first and walked around to the other side as Amelia pushed her door open and stepped out, too.
“Kaia.” Amelia went over and gave her a hug.
After a quick round of hellos, Mason had already popped the trunk and easily unfolded a wheelchair, setting. it up on the ground.
Amelia and Kaia walked over to the back door together.
“Evan, we’re here,” Mason said softly.
The door opened, revealing Evan’s gentle face.
He smiled at Mason first, then shifted his gaze to the two girls outside the car.
Kaia’s curiosity was instantly sparked.
She had long heard Amelia mention that Mason was bringing his brother, who had trouble walking, to see her grandfather.
In her mind, she had imagined the Everetts‘ eldest son in countless ways–mostly gloomy, worn down, or dulled by fate.
After all, falling from the top of the world couldn’t feel good.
She stepped forward, wanting to help him out.
In that very moment, her eyes unexpectedly met Evan’s calm, gentle gaze.

There was none of the darkness she had imagined.

In the depths of his eyes, there was no resentment toward fate, no weakness from long illness, and no despair from being trapped in a wheelchair.
Instead, there was a steady, settled peace, as if shaped by years of wind and weather–clean and warm like a mountain breeze, carrying a reassuring power.
He sat in the car and had to tilt his head slightly to look at her, but his composed presence was completely untouched by his physical condition.
Kaia felt her heart skip a beat, out of nowhere.
Amelia didn’t notice her friend zoning out for a moment. She stepped up and smoothly made the introductions. “Kaia, this is Mason’s brother, Evan. This is Kaia, Zach’s granddaughter.”
Kaia snapped back to her senses, a soft blush creeping across her cheeks.
She gave a small, awkward nod.
Evan, meanwhile, smiled at her warmly. His voice was smooth and clear. “Hello, Ms. Preston.”
It was just a simple greeting–polite and reserved, but with a warmth she couldn’t ignore.
Kaia opened her mouth, about to reply, but Mason stepped forward and smoothly took the wheelchair handles from her hands.
“I’ve got it.”
Mason and Amelia stood on either side, carefully helping Evan out of the the wheelchair.

Once he was settled, Mason started pushing the wheelchair, steering him down the village path toward Zach’s house.
“Let’s go,” Amelia said, tugging lightly on Kaia, who was still standing there in a daze.
“Oh… okay.” Kaia snapped out of her daze and followed.
She trailed a half–step behind the group, her gaze unintentionally fixed on the figure in the wheelchair ahead.
His back was straight, and even on the bumpy country road, he held himself with a calm, graceful poise.
Kaia had heard some rumors about the Everetts‘ eldest son before.

Thinking of this, Kaia’s gaze shifted to Mason pushing the wheelchair ahead, her expression growing complicated.
When they arrived, Zach was sitting at the stone table in the courtyard, calmly brewing coffee.
“Mr. Preston,” Amelia called out first, her voice full of warmth.
Zach looked up. Seeing them, a faint smile appeared on his usually serious face. “You’re here. Have a seat.”
Compared to the last time they met, Amelia could clearly tell that Zach looked thinner. There was a tired look between his brows, and he seemed clearly more worn out.
