Mason leaned casually against the doorframe, his posture relaxed but carrying an unmistakable edge of aggression.
The moment Amelia saw the faint, teasing smile on his handsome face, she was reminded of how he had laughed at her that morning.
The embarrassment of that public humiliation surged back all at once.
She deliberately put on a stern expression and blocked the doorway, snapping irritably, “What are you doing here? Do you need something?”
Then, with obvious petulance, she added, “Didn’t I already say I wouldn’t come find you tonight?”
The unspoken message was clear. You can leave now.
Mason pressed lightly against the doorframe, pushing the door open a little wider.
He lowered his head. Under the warm bedroom light, his deep–set eyes gleamed.
“Yes, you said you wouldn’t come over,” he replied calmly.
“But you never said I wasn’t allowed to come here.”
Under normal circumstances, Amelia would have sparred with him without hesitation. But the dull, grinding pain low in her abdomen kept rolling in waves, draining her of both strength and resolve.
“Then please go back,” she said weakly, her voice trailing “I really don’t have the energy to deal with you tonight.”
She lifted her eyes. The clear brightness usually in them was now blurred, as if veiled by mist.
The smile at the corner of Mason’s lips froze the instant she looked up.
Only then did he notice how pale her face was beneath the warm bedroom light, almost translucent. Even the healthy color that usually lingered on her lips had faced.
There wasn’t a trace left of the vitality she had shown during the day.
“What’s wrong?” His brows knit at once, his voice softening unconsciously. “You look awful. Are you sick?”
As he spoke, he stepped inside. His tall frame naturally locked her path as he lifted a hand, instinctively reaching toward her forehead.
Startled by his sudden closeness, Amelia shrank back and avoided his hand.
This was too personal, too private. Instinctively, she didn’t want to show this kind of vulnerability in front of
him.
She turned her face aside, dodging his overly concerned gaze, and muttered awkwardly, “Don’t ask…”
Her hesitant, embarrassed resistance made Mason pause
His eyes swept quickly around the room and landed precisely on the steaming cup of chamomile tea on the
bedside table.

Understanding dawned on him, and he raised a brow slightly.
“Stomachache?” he asked, bending down to meet her eyes.
Caught so directly, Amelia gave up trying to hide it and nodded faintly.

She slipped past him, her steps unsteady as she walked toward the bed, explaining in a subdued voice, “Yeah. It came two days early. At dinner tonight… I couldn’t resist and drank something cold.”
As soon as she finished speaking, she collapsed onto the soft bed, curling herself into a tight ball and pulling the blanket over her head, clearly shutting the world our
Mason stood by the bed, his chest tightening–not sharply, but deep enough to ache with tenderness.
After a few seconds, he turned and left the bedroom.
From beneath the blanket, Amelia heard his footsteps retreating. She couldn’t tell if she felt relieved, or if a faint trace of disappointment still tugged at her heart.
Maybe it was better this way. With him gone, she could relax.
Clinging to that thought, she tried to lull herself to sleep
But barely two or three minutes passed before the door opened again.
Mason reappeared, tall and imposing as ever, but this time he was holding a hot water bottle, carefully wrapped in a soft fabric cover.
He walked to the bed and pulled back the blanket covering Amelia’s head.
“Hold this,” he said, placing the warm hot pack into her arms. Before she could react, he sat down at the edge of the bed, lifted the blanket from the other side, and lay down beside her as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Her body rolled toward him uncontrollably.
“You…” Amelia clutched the hot pack and tried to sit up.
“Don’t move.” A large hand pressed gently against her shoulder. “If it really hurts that much, I’ll call Tim. You don’t have to go in tomorrow.”
“No!” Amelia refused without a second thought. “I already started later than planned. Tomorrow is my first day. I can’t delay it again.”
Then she caught her breath and looked at him stubbornly. “Besides, if I don’t go to work, how am I supposed to pay back the advance the company gave me?”
If she hadn’t mentioned it, Mason would’ve nearly forgotten.
That money meant nothing to him. But as he looked into her stubborn, shining eyes set in a pale face, he suddenly understood exactly what it meant to her.
His throat tightened as he swallowed back all the words that would’ve crushed her pride in an instant- things like, I have more than enough money, or, you don’t need to repay it.

He didn’t press the issue further. Leaning down, he placed a gentle kiss on her smooth forehead.
