“Mr. Clem, you look unusually radiant today,” Amelia said as she walked over, teasing him without restraint “Something good going on? Did you win over Lily’s parents?”
At the mention of Lily, Tim’s smile grew impossible to hide. He waved it off, feigning modesty. “Not that fast. But I’ve been looking at houses lately, getting the place ready as a future marital home. I want to show some sincerity before formally paying them a visit. I can’t have her parents thinking I’m all talk.”
Hearing the seriousness in his tone, Amelia felt genuinely happy for him.
After a few more pleasantries, Tim glanced at his watch. Come on. I’ll walk you over to the design. department.”
“No need. I can go on my own,” Amelia replied, not wanting to draw too much attention.
“That won’t do,” Tim insisted. “You’re stepping into a leadership role. As your superior, I have to personally back you up. Otherwise, how will those girls ever listen to you?”
With that, he strode ahead without waiting for a response and led Amelia to the design department on the 18th floor.
The design department was a spacious open–plan office with a clean, modern aesthetic and a strong artistic atmosphere.
When Tim brought Amelia inside, a subtle stir rippled through the previously quiet space.
Everyone stopped what they were doing and turned to look.
“Everyone, let me introduce her,” Tim said, clapping his hands to draw attention. “This is the person I mentioned before. The future head of our design department. Our design director, Amelia Harlow.”
Amelia stood poised and composed, her calm gaze sweeping over everyone present.
At a glance, aside from Amanda, there were six other women in the department.
Four were designers, and the remaining two handled general

strative work.
After a few obligatory remarks, Tim left the floor to Amelia and turned to go.
Once he was gone, the atmosphere in the office shifted subtly.
Amelia didn’t launch into an inaugural speech. She simply nodded to everyone with a gentle smile, then turned to Amanda. “Show me to my office first.”
Her office was located at the very back of the open area, a private glass–enclosed space with an excellent
view.
The decor followed her preferred minimalist, natural wood style, cool and serene with a faint Zen undertone. It was clear someone had put real thought into it.
Amelia was satisfied.

She set her bag down and took a seat in the comfortable office chair. In an instant, she shifted from the approachable new colleague to decisive director mode.
“Amanda,” she said, “bring me a full report on the department’s current projects and personnel.”
“Of course. I have everything ready,” Amanda replied, handing over a folder immediately.
Amelia opened it, listening as Amanda began her report
“Our department is newly formed, so we only have a few ongoing projects at the moment.
“That said, Mr. Clem has very high standards for this department. After each project is completed, the designers are evaluated based on final results and client feedback to determine whether they stay.”
Amanda paused, lowering her voice slightly. “Before you arrived, two designers were let go because their initial drafts failed to meet internal review standards.”
Amelia’s fingers paused briefly as she turned a page.
A subtle curve lifted her lips, and a long–dormant spark flared in her
eyes.
The entire morning passed with Amelia immersed in the materials Amanda had prepared.
From every proposal submitted since the department’s formation, to financial statements, to each employee’s detailed resume and portfolio, she reviewed everything meticulously.
Near noon, the desk phone rang.
Amelia pressed the speaker button, and Tim’s smiling voice came through. “Ms. Harlow, how’s the workload? Care to join me for lunch? Consider it a welcome lunch.”
Amelia glanced at her watch, closed the last file, and smiled faintly. “Of course. If Mr. Clem is treating me, I wouldn’t dare refuse.”
“I’ll be waiting by the elevators downstairs.”
She hung up, stood, and stretched her slightly stiff shoulders.
After smoothing her suit, she picked up her phone and bag and stepped out of her office.
In the open workspace, a few designers were quietly discussing something. When they saw her, they immediately nodded politely. “Ms. Harlow.”
Amelia returned the gesture with a smile and walked calmly toward the elevator.
When she reached the ground floor, the elevator beside hers also arrived. The doors opened to reveal several men who were clearly senior executives.
Seeing Tim waiting nearby with an unmistakable smile, clearly there for Amelia, the executives‘ eyes filled with open curiosity.
