Chapter 403 I’m Your Boyfriend Now
The moment the message was sent, Mason’s call came through.
Amelia startled, then glanced toward the door with a faintly guilty reflex before answering.
“Hello…” Her voice dropped without her meaning to.
“What’s going on in that head of yours?” His voice came through low and easy. “The car hasn’t gone through final inspection yet, and the plates are still being processed. It’s not road–ready for now.”
“Oh… I didn’t know that.” Amelia felt a little awkward. She had no idea how those things worked.
“And besides,” he paused, his voice slipping through the line as if he were leaning in close, “I’m your boyfriend now. Even if we have to keep things discreet, picking you up and dropping you off is still part of my job.”
The heart she had only just calmed down immediately betrayed her, pounding again.
She buried her face into the soft pillow. After a long moment, she gave a muffled hum. “Alright then. Get
some rest.”
“Okay.” He laughed quietly. “Good night.”
After the call ended, Amelia stayed where she was, face still buried in the pillow, the corners of her mouth lifting despite herself.
The air seemed sweet, almost too sweet, leaving her lightheaded.
And yet, despite everything she said, she genuinely had trouble falling asleep that night.
Without him there, the wide bed felt strangely empty.
She lay awake, turning from side to side, her thoughts circling endlessly around Mason and the things he
had said.
Only then did it hit her that her reliance on him had quietly grown heavier than she realized.
Back when she had loved Ethan so intensely, she had never been like this.
She had been careful then, always playing the role of the considerate, well–mannered wife. She always kept just the right distance, afraid that being too forward would only push him away.
But with Mason, all her restraint and composure seemed useless.
She’d get anxious when he didn’t show up. She even … lost sleep because of his absence.
It turned out that once someone truly treated you with care, you softened without noticing.
That night, Amelia drifted in and out of sleep, unsure when she had finally passed out.
The next morning, she was jolted awake by her alarm. She dragged herself out of bed, washed up quickly,

As she reached the stairs, she saw Mason already downstairs, fully dressed, seated in the dining area.
Nearby, Nora was busy in the living room, helping Evan to organize some everyday items to take with
him.
Hearing her footsteps, Mason looked up and gave her a once–over before asking, fully aware of the answer, “Rough night? You don’t look too great.”
Heat rushed to Amelia’s face.
She quickly looked away, hurried down the stairs, pulled out the chair across from him, and sat down. denying it outright. “Nope. Maybe… the dinner last night wore me out.”
The excuse sounded weak even to her.
Mason did not call her out. His eyes held a knowing smile, which only made her more self–conscious. She lowered her head and focused on the bowl of oatmeal in front of her.
They finished breakfast in silence. Mason picked up his car keys and stood.
“Mom, Evan, I’ll drop Amelia off at work first.”
“Go on,” Nora said with a smile. “Drive carefully.”
Back in the familiar Maybach, Amelia still did not quite dare to look at him.
The car stayed quiet for a few minutes. Just when she thought the subject had passed, Mason suddenly turned his head, his tone uncharacteristically serious. “I wasn’t there last night. Did you miss me?”
The question was far more direct than his comment at breakfast, and far harder to dodge.
Amelia’s heart skipped. She tightened her grip on the seat belt and stared stubbornly out the window at the passing streets. “No. I slept fine. Out like a light till morning.”
