Chapter 404 That’s Premeditated
Amelia’s eyes widened in surprise, and she asked without thinking, “When was that?”

Mason shot her a sidelong glance, the corner of his mouth lifting as he answered unhurriedly, “Before you… knew I’d come back.”
The weight of that answer landed all at once, hitting Amelia straight in the chest.
Before she even knew he had returned… he had already bought a place.
And he said it was for Evan’s treatment?
She had always known this about him. His plans were never short–term. He always thought several steps ahead, far beyond what she could see.
In a flash, something she had overlooked for a long time suddenly snapped into focus.
Amelia reacted immediately. “Then when we stayed at Dr. Preston’s place before, why didn’t you say you already had a house? And why did you insist on squeezing into the same room with me?”
Faced with her accusation, the man behind the wheel remained completely unruffled.
His eyes stayed on the road as he drove smoothly forward.
“Because I wanted to be in the same room as you.”
For a few seconds, Amelia’s mind went completely blank.
All she could hear was her own heartbeat, pounding hard, one beat heavier than the last, until her ears buzzed.
She lifted a hand and covered her burning cheeks. Even her fingertips could feel the heat of her skin.
She did not dare turn to look at him. Instead, she locked her gaze on the window, pretending to study the streets sliding past.
But the familiar buildings outside had blurred into streaks of color.
Every sense she had was helplessly drawn toward the man beside her, whose presence felt impossibly
strong.
How could Mason say something so bold and shameless in such a calm, matter–of–fact tone?
Before she even knew he had returned to the country, he had already bought a place near Kaia’s home for Evan’s treatment.
And yet that night, he never mentioned it. He calmly used the excuse of staying over and shared that small guest room with her.
Yes, he had shown restraint. He had spent the entire night on the couch, uncomfortable and cramped.

But the truth was, sharing the room that night melted the invisible distance between them. There was no denying it
From the start, he’d had that kind of intention toward her.
Amelia’s heart felt sweet and tangled all at once, like she had swallowed too much honey. It was overwhelmingly sweet, almost too much, yet she could not stop savoring it.
And right on its heels came an even stronger wave of embarrassment.
Just as her thoughts spiraled and she had no idea how to handle the suffocating intimacy, the car slowed and stopped smoothly.
Up ahead, the light turned red.
Amelia let out a quiet breath, thinking the brief pause might give her racing heart a chance to settle.
She underestimated Mason.
Almost the instant the car stopped, she sensed the man beside her unbuckling his seat belt and leaning slightly toward her.
Her heart jolted. She turned instinctively and ran straight into his deep, dark gaze.
Morning light spilled in the windows and caught in Mason’s eyes, which carried an unmistakable possessiveness.
“You…”
She had barely managed a single word when his face suddenly filled her vision.
Warm, soft pressure landed on her lips.
The kiss was light and brief, barely more than a touch, gone before she could react.
The clean, familiar scent of him wrapped around her, stealing her breath in an instant.
Amelia’s eyes flew wide open.
Only after Mason settled back into his seat and fastened his seat belt again did reality finally catch up with
her.
This was the middle of the road.
Cars were passing by. Anyone could have seen.
She clapped a hand over her mouth. Beneath her palm, her lips still seemed to hold the warmth he had
left behind.
She stared at the culprit, who looked perfectly calm. “Mason, how can you be so sly?”
The light turned green. Mason pulled the car forward and glanced at her, the curve of his smile unmistakably pleased.

“That’s not sly,” he said lightly. “That’s premeditated.”
Amelia realized she had no hope of keeping up with this man’s way of thinking. All she could do was let herself be led, step by step, straight into the gentle trap he had so carefully set.
The car moved steadily on. Before long, Stardale Tower appeared in the distance.
Staring out the window, Amelia finally managed to recover a sliver of calm.
She took a deep breath, pointed toward an upcoming intersection, and said, “You can drop me off there.”
Mason paused slightly on the brake and raised an eyebrow. “Why? There’s still a bit to go. You feel like walking?”
“No,” Amelia said quickly. The blush on her face had not fully faded, but her expression had already returned to its usual seriousness. “Did you forget? The last few times you drove me to work, it was in the Volvo. I even told my coworkers that was my boyfriend’s car.”
