Chapter 417 Almost Brave
Finis
“I…” Amelia’s heart skipped. She hurried to explain, “I wasn’t planning to open it now. I was going to hav some last night, but it didn’t end up snowing, and I got sleepy, so I just left it here.”
Mason raised a brow slightly and walked in.
He stopped in front of her, his gaze moving from the bottle in her hand to her slightly flustered face. Without a word, he took the wine from her and picked up the corkscrew from the cabinet.
“You don’t need a special occasion to drink wine.”
With a clean pop, the cork came out smoothly.
He turned, took out two wine glasses, and poured a small amount into each.
Handing one to her, he asked, “Where did you plan to watch the snow last night?”
Amelia pointed toward the large floor–to–ceiling window. “On the carpet over there.”
Mason glanced in that direction, then walked over first, holding his glass. He sat down naturally on the carpet.
Amelia hesitated for a moment before following and sitting beside him.
Only a few dim wall lights were on in the room.
Outside the massive window was a vast stretch of white.
The snowfall seemed lighter now. Small flakes spun slowly under the glow of the streetlights.
“I didn’t expect it to snow this much when spring is almost here,” Amelia said softly, trying to break the heavy silence.
Mason gave a quiet “Mm” but did not add anything.
He lifted his glass and took an elegant sip, his deep gaze fixed on the snow outside.
Amelia stole a glance at him from the corner of her eye.
He sat beside her, one long leg casually bent. In the soft lighting, the lines of his profile looked even more defined. His Adam’s apple moved subtly as he swallowed, carrying a quiet kind of sensuality.
He looked like he was focused on the snow, yet Amelia could clearly feel that most of his attention rested on her.
The only sounds in the air were the wind outside and the quiet, charged rhythm of their breathing.
In the extreme stillness, Amelia’s heartbeat grew louder and faster.
It felt as if the pounding traveled all the way to her fingertips, making them tingle. Even her breathing no longer felt steady.

Chapter 417 Almost Brave
Finished
She felt like she should do something. Or maybe she wanted to.
In this space that belonged only to the two of them, in this perfectly balanced atmosphere, with snow falling outside, wine in her hand, and the man she had chosen sitting beside her, everything felt like a carefully written scene in a movie.
All that was missing was for the heroine to take one brave step forward.
But in the presence of Mason’s overwhelming composure, her courage vanished the moment it appeared.
She could only sit there stiffly, like a nervous student, mechanically lifting the wineglass to her lips and taking small sips, using that single repetitive motion to hide the storm raging inside her.
She should not have been like this.
Lily’s exasperated face suddenly flashed in her mind.
More than once, Lily had lectured her on the unspoken rules between men and women.
“Amelia, I’m telling you, sometimes you have to make the first move. Don’t just sit there waiting for him. What if he’s waiting for you too? Just give him a hint. Kiss him. Touch him. Unless he’s a saint, it’ll work. What’s the point of being reserved? Is that going to feed you? By the time you’re done being polite, he’ll be gone.”
Lily’s bold words echoed in her ears.
Amelia could almost picture Lily physically shoving her into Mason’s arms if she were here.
She really should have been braver.
For example … she could lean over right now and kiss those well–defined lips.
Judging from Mason’s behavior tonight, if she made the first move, everything that followed might fall naturally into place.
But thoughts were just thoughts.
Cold reality quickly extinguished the spark that had just begun to burn.
She remembered that trip they had taken before. Back then, she had gathered nearly all the courage she had and tried to flirt with him in subtle and not–so–subtle ways.
Each time, she had felt his body stiffen and seen the restrained fire in his eyes.
But at the last moment, he had always pulled back, using flawless self–control to keep her passion at a distance.
At the time, his reason had been that they were in a hotel and the setting did not feel appropriate.
