Chapter 416 Waiting

“Mason!” Amelia did not even dare look at him. She glared at his tall back, pretending to be annoyed, though her voice sounded more like shy protest than real anger. “W–what are you talking about? Just cook. I’m hungry!”
With that, she turned and hurried out of the kitchen as if escaping, then obediently sat down in the dining
room.
The open space was filled only with the sizzling sound from the kitchen. The smell of butter drifted through the air, making her heart beat even faster.
Soon, Mason walked out carrying two white porcelain plates.
He had already taken off the apron. He set a perfectly cooked sirloin in front of Amelia, then pulled out the chair across from her and sat down.
“Want to open a bottle of red?” he asked casually, picking up his napkin. His eyes flicked to her still flushed face, amusement flashing briefly in them.
“N–no,” Amelia shook her head almost immediately. She picked up her knife and fork and hurriedly cut of a small piece of steak, as if trying to hide her nerves. “It’s late. Let’s just eat and go to bed early.”
The truth was, she was nervous.
She had a vague feeling that something might happen tonight, here in the estate with only the two of them.
Ever since Mason showed up outside her office, every step he had taken seemed to be paving the way for this private evening.
This time alone together had been carefully planned.
That was exactly why she did not dare drink.
She knew very well what she was like after alcohol. Things would probably spiral out of control.
Mason looked at her quietly for a long moment. He did not push. “Alright,” he said.
Dinner ended in a subtle silence.
They cleared the dishes together and loaded them into the dishwasher.
After that, they sat side by side on the soft couch in the living room and turned on the TV.
A lighthearted comedy show was playing. The laughter of the host and guests filled the room, but none of it reached the two people on the couch.
Amelia hugged a throw pillow and stared at the screen absentmindedly.
Outside, snow continued to fall tirelessly, wrapping the world in a blanket of pure stillness,

But her heart felt anything but calm.
The tension in the kitchen earlier now felt like a fleeting illusion.

Mason sat quietly beside her, watching the TV with a composed expression, his usual steady distance restored.
Suddenly, Amelia felt that tonight was no different from any other evening.
After a while, Mason glanced at his watch and stood up. “I’m going to shower.”
‘Okay.”
Amelia watched him walk away, then got up and returned to her own room.
Once inside, she hesitated for a moment. When she closed the door, she deliberately left it slightly ajar.
She was not entirely sure what she was expecting.
Maybe she just thought that if he came by after his shower, the door would already be open.
With that vague, restless hope, she went into the bathroom.
She took an unusually long shower and carefully dried her hair afterward.
When she stepped out, the room was silent.
There was no movement outside the door.
He had not come.
Amelia sat down on the small couch in her room, twisting the hem of her nightgown unconsciously as she waited a little longer.
Still nothing.
Her thoughts began to wander.
Maybe he had only given the staff the night off to make dinner easier.
Maybe there had never been any other intention.
He had been running between the company and the hospital all day, then cooked dinner for her. He must have been exhausted and already asleep.
The excitement she had been carrying all evening slowly faded.
She stood up, deciding not to wait anymore, and walked toward the curtains to close them and go to bed.
As she turned, her eyes landed on the low cabinet in the corner of the room.
There, quietly standing, was a bottle of red wine.

It was the one she had prepared the night before when she had been hoping to watch the snow. The snow had not fallen then, and she had not opened it. It had stayed there ever since, almost forgotten.
Amelia walked over and picked up the bottle, intending to put it away.
Just then, Mason’s low voice came from behind her without warning.
“If you wanted to open a bottle, why didn’t you wait for me?”
Her body stiffened instantly. The hand holding the bottle froze midair.
Slowly, she turned around. Mason stood at her doorway.
He had changed into loungewear and leaned casually against the frame, looking almost unreal, like a carefully composed painting that had suddenly stepped into her line of sight.
