She had long learned to hide every bit of hurt and frustration from Ethan. Even if she spoke her mind, he considered her being unreasonable.
But Mason was different.
She slowed her steps and turned to look at him. The lights along the riverbank reflected in his deep eyes, like tiny stars moving across dark water.
“Yeah.” Amelia nodded honestly. “He’s Ethan’s friend. I ran into him in the hallway earlier. When he saw I was with you, he asked me to introduce you. He said he wanted to talk business with you.”
She paused, then added, “He even threatened me. He said if I didn’t help, he’d tell Ethan that you and I were having an affair.
“I told him to go ahead and say whatever he wanted. Then he got upset.”
Mason fell quiet before he slowly smiled.
“Oh?” He raised an eyebrow. “So you’re not worried others will find out about us?”
Amelia froze for a moment. Heat crept onto her cheeks. She looked away and muttered, “I–I’m not a coward, okay?
“And in that situation, if I’d acted timid or backed down, he would’ve thought I was scared–thought I still
wasn’t over Ethan.”
Mason understood. For Amelia, saying those words out loud was already huge progress.
In her own way, she was cutting ties with her past. She was trying to walk toward him.
“Mm. You did well,” he said softly. Then, he pulled her into his arms and held her tight.
His embrace was warm and solid, blocking out the cold wind by the river.
Mason’s heart softened.
He already had the person he treasured most. Whether their relationship was public or not didn’t matter much to him anymore.
The river breeze was gentle. Amelia relaxed in Mason’s warmth.
At a construction project site in another state, Ethan rubbed his aching temples, exhausted.
Several days of intense work had drained him. He had just finished a video meeting when he finally checked his phone. The screen showed several missed calls from Wade.
Ethan frowned. Wade always liked to make trouble out of nothing, which annoyed him. But they had grown up together, so Ethan still called back.

His call was picked up almost instantly. Wade’s loud voice exploded through the speaker.
“Holy shit! You finally called back! What are you still doing out of town? Your wife is about to get stolen!”
Ethan pulled the phone away from his ear. His tone turned cold. “Just say what you want. I’m busy.”
“Busy? Your wife is about to run off with another guy!” Wade sounded excited at his misfortune; he had found shocking gossip. “Listen. Tonight Amelia and Mason came to my restaurant for dinner. They were super close. And after dinner, they left holding hands. I never expected this. Amelia always looked quiet and gentle. Turns out she’s bold and cheated on you!”
A sharp pain stabbed into Ethan’s heart.
“Hey, when did those two even get together? You seriously didn’t know?” Wade kept talking, completely unaware of the deadly silence on Ethan’s side.
When did it start?
Ethan’s face turned pale.
He wanted to know too. Desperately. When did Amelia start turning toward Mason?
He didn’t dare to think about that.
Because the more he thought, the more past memories would surface.
And he might realize he was the one who pushed the girl who loved him deeply into Mason’s arms.
His throat felt blocked. Tight. Bitter.
He held it in for a long time. The storm inside him finally turned into one angry shout.
“Fuck off! It’s none of your business!”
That night, Ethan had a terrible nightmare.
In the dream, he returned to the home he once shared with Amelia. Everything in the living room looked familiar. But he felt like an invisible intruder; he didn’t belong anymore.
On the couch, Amelia was in Mason’s arms.
He watched Mason lower his head and gently kiss her lips.
