Chapter 428 Crisis at Home
At the very end of the dream, Mason finally turned and looked at him.
His eyes were full of the smugness of a winner.
Mason pulled Amelia closer into his arms, like he was claiming her in front of the world.
“Ethan, look. Amelia belongs to me now. What right do you have to compete with me?”
“Amelia, don’t-!”
Ethan jerked awake. He shot upright in bed, his heart pounding so hard it almost hurt. Sweat had already soaked through the back of his shirt.
He breathed fast and shallow. The scene from the dream kept replaying in his mind, sharp and painful.
Something wet and cold touched his cheek. He wiped it without thinking. His fingers felt something damp.
Tears. I had been crying?
Ethan froze, like all the strength had drained out of his body.
Outside the window, dawn was just breaking. In the distance, machines from a construction site were starting up.
The noise of the real world clashed hard with the silent despair from the dream.
And that contrast forced him to face one brutal truth.
Amelia was with Mason now. That was reality.
He had always believed Amelia’s love for him was unshakable.
It made him fearless. He treated her badly without care.
Back then, he was sure that no matter how far he went, if he turned around, Amelia would still be there. waiting for him.
But now, he had lost her.
Mason’s words from the dream shattered Ethan’s pride into pieces.
Yeah. What right do I have?
In terms of family power, money, and influence, Mason’s family had never been weaker than his family. If anything, they were stronger.
Mason was one of the best of their generation. Smart. Ruthless. Capable. Way beyond Ethan.
The only reason Ethan had ever looked down on Mason was because he had Amelia’s love.

But now, Amelia didn’t love him anymore.
With his biggest advantage gone, everything he was proud of suddenly looked weak in front of Mason.
How am I supposed to win Amelia back?
Once, Ethan thought it would be easy.
If he just lowered his pride a little, treated her better, and coaxed her like he used to, she would come back. Just like she had countless times before.
Only now, after this nightmare that tore him apart, did he finally realize it had all been a self–deceiving fantasy.
After that, Ethan stayed awake all night.
Just as frustration and self–doubt were about to swallow him whole, his phone suddenly rang on the nightstand. The sound snapped him out of his thoughts.
He glanced at it, annoyed. The username “Mom” flashed across the screen.
He didn’t want to answer.
Ethan didn’t want to talk to anyone. He just wanted to be alone, even if it meant drowning in this pain.
But the phone kept ringing. Over and over.
Ethan frowned deeply. Finally, he swiped to answer.
“Ethan!” The moment the call connected, Grace’s voice came through, tight and strained. “Your grandma… She collapsed and was taken to the hospital. Come back right now.”
Ethan’s heart dropped. His foggy mind cleared a little.
“Is it serious? Which hospital?”
“It’s not that serious.” Grace hesitated. The silence on the line felt heavier than words.
A few seconds later, she continued, “Anyway, drop everything and come home now.”
Ethan’s gut told him this was not simple.
He hesitated. Work projects were spinning through his mind. “But Mom, my project is at a critical stage. I can’t really leave now.”
“Forget the project!”
Grace cut him off with a sharp shout.
Her voice, which had clearly been held back for a long time, now carried the sound of tears.
“Our family is about to fall apart, and you’re still thinking about work?!”
