Amelia finally understood why Fiona had been the only one who ever showed her kindness in that cold
and strict estate.
Fiona never looked down on her for being an adopted daughter. Fiona never made her feel inferior simply because she didn’t come from a wealthy family.
All those moments Amelia once brushed off as polite gestures now came back to her when she read Fiona’s words.
Fiona had not pitied her. She had seen her life reflected in Amelia’s shadow.
At the same time, in the CEO’s office of Stardale Group.
Mason’s fingers moved slowly across his keyboard.
On the screen was the news article that had pushed Amelia into the spotlight, along with a flood of harsh online comments that kept refreshing nonstop.
His brows tightened. A cold glint passed through his eyes.
He knew Amelia well. She was not the kind of woman who would covet the Rowes money.
If she had shown up at the law firm, there had to be a reason.
The public did not care about truth. They only believed what they wanted to believe.
Mason also knew Amelia’s weakness.
She was too kind. Too emotional.
Once someone had shown her a little warmth, she found it hard to turn away.
Fiona was critically ill. No matter how one looked at it, Amelia could never stay completely out of it.
And that softness, that compassion, was exactly what Ethan could use against her.
Men who played the tired “win–her–back” game were best at one thing. Men would use a woman’s kindness and old feelings to open doors that should have remained closed.
Mason tapped the screen and shut the page.
He reached for the phone on his desk, about to give an order, when a knock came at the door.
“Come in.”
Vince walked in, holding a stack of documents. It was the monthly report from the marketing departinent.
He stood respectfully in front of the desk and began to explain the data and market feedback in an orderly
way.

Mason listened quietly, nodding occasionally.

“That concludes this month’s report,” Vince said, placing the folder carefully at the corner of the desk.
“Got it,” Mason replied flatly. “Leave the report. I’ll discuss it with Mr. Clem and get back to you.”
“Yes, Mr. Everett.”
But even after the report was finished, Vince did not leave.
He stood there, hesitant, his expression uneasy, as if struggling with something.
Mason noticed at once. His gaze landed on Vince, cool and sharp.
Vince’s heart skipped, but as if making up his mind, he forced himself to speak. “Mr. Everett, are you very close with Ms. Harlow from the design department?”
The temperature in the room dropped instantly.
Mason raised an eyebrow, pressure rolling quietly through the air.
“And why is that any of your concern?”
His voice was calm, almost light. But a chill ran down Vince’s back.
Still, once the words were out, there was no turning back.
Vince swallowed and continued, “Mr. Everett, in my eyes, you’ve always been a wise and decisive leader. You’re clearly not someone who would be easily swayed by looks. /
“As for Ms. Harlow, I won’t comment on her professional ability for now. But from what I’ve observed, she doesn’t seem able to handle her emotions well. She’s been tangled with the CEO from Rowe Group for a long time. And now, with this kind of news spreading online…”
He paused, then pushed on. “And her personal conduct may need closer review. I’m worried that if someone like her stays too close to you, it could harm both your reputation and the company’s image. I hope you’ll see things clearly and not be misled by appearances.”
In all his years, no one had ever dared to openly smear someone Mason cared about–right in front of
him.
And it was a man.
The air in the office was no longer just cold. It was frozen solid.
Every word Vince added sounded like a loud noise echoed in this silent room. Clumsy, Loud Foolish.
Mason did not even need to think deeply. He could sense it clearly. Vince harbored selfish intentions toward Amelia.
