That made a small sense of hope grow inside Amelia.

Just then, Nora lifted her wrist and checked the time on her watch. “Oh my, we talked so long we lost track of time,” she said softly. “If I’m guessing right, Evan’s therapy should be done by now.”
No one spoke after that. As if by silent agreement, they turned and walked back toward the courtyard the way they came.
On the way back, Amelia felt completely different from before.
The moment they stepped through the gate, the tightly shut therapy room door opened from the inside.
Kaia slowly pushed Evan out in his wheelchair.
All eyes turned toward him.
Evan’s face was pale, nearly paper–white.
The hair on his forehead was soaked with sweat. His clothes were damp too.

He leaned weakly against the back of the chair. His breathing was shallow and uneven. Exhaustion clung to him like a heavy coat.
Hayden, who had been waiting by the door, ran over right away. He grabbed the armrest of the wheelchair, his eyes full of worry. “Dad, how do you feel?”
Evan forced a weak smile. His hand, still shaking slightly, lifted as if he wanted to pat his son’s head. But he didn’t have the strength.
He could only nod gently. “I’m okay,” he said hoarsely.
Mason took the wheelchair handles from Kaia.
When he saw his brother’s pale face, his expression darkened. He silently pushed Evan to the table in the middle of the yard.
Kaia followed beside them and explained to everyone, “Evan’s pain will keep getting stronger. But this is normal. It means the leg nerves that have been dead and numb for years are slowly waking up. The stronger the pain gets, the better the chance of recovery.”
Her words brought a small but bright hope to the heartbreaking scene.
Evan took a slow breath. Then he turned his head and gave her a gentle smile. “Thank you for your hard work, Ms. Preston.”
“You’re welcome. It’s my job,” Kaia said, shaking her head politely.
The moment she met Evan’s eyes, she quickly looked away.
A faint blush crept onto her cheeks.

Amelia noticed their interaction.
Her heart shifted slightly, but she stayed quiet and calm.
She sensed a subtle spark between them, something almost no one else would notice. But she also knew this was not the time to talk about romance or feelings.
Right now, Evan’s entire focus had to be on healing his body.
Any extra feelings he couldn’t respond to would only become a burden.
Besides, only the people involved really knew what was going on.
After Nora gently thanked Kaia for her hard work, the group left the courtyard house.
The night had grown deeper.
Mason walked in front, pushing the wheelchair. The wheels made soft, steady sounds.
Nora and Amelia walked behind them. Hayden quietly held onto his grandmother’s clothes.
They passed through a narrow stone path and pushed open a half–closed wooden door across the way.
Nora flipped the switch on the courtyard wall. Warm orange lights filled the yard instantly.
This courtyard looked similar to Preston’s, but it had its own charm.
Instead of trays and racks full of herbs, rows of roses were planted neatly along the walls.
It wasn’t peak blooming season, but a few flowers were still open.
“Mason bought this house a long time ago,” Nora told Amelia warmly. “He thought if Evan came here for treatment, he would need a place to stay. After I moved here, I thought it felt too empty. So I had someone plant flowers to make it feel more alive. Your room is on the second floor, the one at the far east end. We already replaced all the bedding with new ones.”
Amelia smiled. “I’m not picky. However you arrange it is fine.”
Inside the living room, Mason pushed his brother to the bathroom door and spoke to him quietly.
Evan had just finished therapy that felt like torture. His whole body was weak and drained. Still, he waved his hand at Mason, signaling he could manage.
Over the years, through endless daily struggles, he had learned to take care of most things himself. He never wanted to be a burden to anyone, not even his closest family.
Mason understood his brother’s pride and stubbornness. He didn’t say anything more.
He handed Evan a towel, then turned and closed the bathroom door, giving him privacy.
“I’ll go get Amelia’s luggage from the other courtyard,” he told Nora.

“Go ahead,” Nora said, waving her hand. Then she took Hayden’s hand gently. “Come on, Hayden. Let’s go to the room. I need to check your homework.”
