“Come on. I’ll take you upstairs,” he said, closing the gate behind him.

“Okay.” Amelia nodded and followed him. Step by step, she climbed the wooden stairs behind him.

The stairs creaked softly. In the quiet house, the sound felt louder than it should be.

She thought about the secret Nora mentioned earlier, the one about the wood carving. Then she looked at the broad, steady back in front of her. A warm, sweet feeling spread through her chest.

Mason stopped at the room on the far east side of the second floor. He took out a key and opened the door.

The bedroom was clean and cozy. The setup was simple, but every detail showed care.

Amelia stood at the doorway and didn’t rush inside.

She watched Mason place her suitcase near the door and open the window to let fresh air in.

Leaning lightly against the doorframe, she rested her chin on her hand and dragged out his name on purpose. “Mason…”

“This is my room.”

“Over there.”

Amelia turned to look at the closed door behind her, then turned back and laughed.

“Mason, you totally planned this,” she said, exposing him with a grin.

The moment her words ended, he suddenly moved.

In one quick motion, he caught her.

“Planned this?” His voice dropped lower than usual, rough and deep in the quiet room. “Yeah. I did.”

“You want to switch rooms and sleep in mine instead?”

Amelia’s heart pounded wildly.

She only wanted to tease him a little, using the affection she had just realized he had for her.

He didn’t avoid it. He admitted it and turned the situation right back on her.

His deep eyes looked like they were burning in the dim light, like he might completely overwhelm her.

Just as the air turned dangerously sweet, Nora’s voice suddenly called from downstairs. “Mason, are you done? Come down for a second!”

To Amelia, that voice felt like perfect timing.

Mason frowned slightly, clearly annoyed at being interrupted.

He kept her pinned there and looked at her deeply.

His throat moved as he swallowed. Finally, he answered toward the stairs, voice low. “Yeah. Coming.”

Even so, he didn’t let her go right away.

The tension in the air didn’t disappear. If anything, they felt closer.

He leaned down closer. Then, right in front of Amelia’s wide eyes, he pressed a quick kiss to her lips.
