Chapter 466 She Wouldn’t Make This
Finished
Amelia spun around, eyes wide. “Thirty minutes? It hasn’t even been 30 seconds! What kind of watch are you using?”
Mason kept a straight face and glanced at his watch. “It doesn’t matter. My watch says the time is up.”
Night fell thick and dark.
Kaia stood by the stove, fully focused.
The fish they caught earlier was being turned into something amazing in her hands.
In one pot, fish heads and tails were cooked with spices. The soup bubbled gently, turning milky white and releasing a rich, mouthwatering aroma. Just smelling it was enough to make anyone hungry.
Nearby, oil crackled loudly in a pan.
The cleaned small fish were dipped in egg and flour.
As soon as they hit the oil, the coating puffed up and turned golden.
Before long, the sliding kitchen door was quietly pulled open a crack, and a small head peeked inside.
Hayden was still wearing his daytime clothes. His big eyes were fixed on the fish frying in the pan as he took a deep sniff.
“That smells so good…” he said sincerely.
He stayed polite and didn’t rush inside. Standing at the door, he greeted her first, then walked closer and asked, “Ms. Preston, can I help?”
Kaia chuckled. She flipped the fish with her spatula and said gently, “There’s a lot of smoke here. Stay a bit farther back. What do you need?”
Hayden twisted his fingers together, clearly shy. But the temptation of food won in the end.
He swallowed and asked hopefully, “Ms. Preston, can I try one fried fish first? Just one!”
Seeing the hope in his eyes, Kaia’s heart softened right away.
Who could say no to a cute kid?
“Of course.” She smiled, picked out a perfectly fried fish, and let the oil drain on a paper towel. Then, she carefully blew on it until it wasn’t too hot before placing it into Hayden’s waiting plate.
“Be careful. It’s hot,” she reminded him.
Hayden couldn’t wait. He grabbed the tail, blew on it once more, and then took a big bite.
Crunch!

The crisp sound was extra loud in the quiet kitchen.
His eyes lit up as he chewed.
Finished
Kaia couldn’t help smiling at how satisfied he looked. “Slow down. There’s plenty. You look like you’ve been starving. Don’t your parents cook this for you at home?”
It was just a casual question, and she hadn’t thought much of it when she asked.
But Hayden’s chewing slowed, and his eyes dimmed almost instantly.
He swallowed the fish, then carefully set the half–caten piece back on the plate.
Kaia’s heart dropped. She realized she might have messed up.
Just as she was panicking, Hayden spoke softly.
“Mom wouldn’t make this for me.
“When I was very little, she gave me to Dad and didn’t want us anymore.”
Kaia froze. The spatula in her hand stayed stuck in the air.
She had only known that Hayden was Evan’s son from a past relationship.
In her mind, she assumed it was just young love that fell apart, and the child staying with the father wasn’t that strange.
She never thought the real story would be so cruel.
“I’m sorry, Hayden…” Kaia’s voice turned dry. She quickly turned off the stove, squatted down, and looked at him with guilt. “That was my fault.”
Seeing her eyes start to redden, Hayden rushed to smile and comfort her instead. “It’s okay, Ms. Preston. It’s not your
fault.
“Even without Mom, I’m not alone. I have lots of family who care about me.”
Kaia’s eyes burned.
She stood up, turned the heat back on, and fried the rest of the fish, stacking it all on Hayden’s small plate.
But Hayden didn’t keep them all to himself.
He happily ran into the living room and shouted, “Everyone, come eat! Ms. Preston’s fried fish is super good!”
Kaia stayed in the kitchen, watching his small figure leave, her heart unsettled for a long while.
When Amelia came in from outside, she saw Kaia standing by the stove, staring blankly toward the living
room.
“Kaia? Are you okay?” Amelia asked gently.

She rolled up her sleeves, walked to the sink, and started washing vegetables. “What can I help with?”
“Oh, it’s nothing.” Kaia snapped back and forced a smile. “Most of it is done. Just the fish chowder left.
