Chapter 465 Craving?
Time passed quietly in that easy, relaxed mood.
By evening, when they checked the small bucket, they found a pretty good catch.
Nothing huge, but over a dozen palm–sized white fish swam around inside. That was more than enough.
Mason washed the net in the river, then picked out a few of the smallest fish from the bucket. He wrapped them in a big leaf, getting ready to return the net.
Seeing him about to go alone, Amelia spoke up, “I’ll go with you.”
Only after saying it did she realize how shy it sounded.
Mason paused and glanced back at her.
The fading sunlight traced her profile, making her eyes shine in the dusk.
His lips curved slightly. “Hmm.”
Evan and the others carried the fish back to the house, while Amelia followed Mason down the narrow path leading into town.
The countryside evening was quiet and peaceful.
They walked without talking, yet nothing about it felt awkward. It was a peaceful kind of comfort.
A few times, Amelia wanted to ask how he’d borrowed the net so fast.
But each time, she stopped herself, worried she’d sound too nosy.
While she was still arguing with herself, Mason stopped in front of a neat, well–kept farmhouse.
An elderly man with graying hair sat on the steps near the gate.
A chubby orange cat lay lazily at his feet. When it noticed them, its ears perked up warily.
“Sir, here’s your net. Thank you,” Mason said, stepping forward and handing it over along with the wrapped fish.
The old man took the net, squinted at it, and then looked past Mason at Amelia.
He scanned her, then broke into a knowing smile and said loudly, “Oh! She’s so young. No wonder she’s craving wild fish.”
Amelia froze.
Craving?
Is he talking about me?

She looked at Mason in confusion, silently asking what that meant.

Mason caught her look and stayed calm. Smiling, he said, “He probably thinks you look friendly and familiar.”
As he spoke, he squatted naturally, opened the leaf, and placed the small fish on the ground.
The orange cat smelled them right away and rushed over, meowing happily as it ate.
Amelia looked at Mason suspiciously. Something felt off.
After saying goodbye to the old man, they headed back.
The sun had fully dipped behind the mountains, and the sky had gone dark.
Amelia’s curiosity finally boiled over.
She sped up, stepped in front of Mason, and said seriously, “Mason, tell me the truth. How did you borrow that net?”
When he only raised an eyebrow and stayed quiet, she added, “If you don’t tell me, I … I won’t talk to you for an hour!”
Mason burst out laughing.
He tapped her forehead lightly. “Such a bad temper.”
Teasing aside, he decided to satisfy her curiosity and said, “It was easy.”
Amelia perked right up.
“I told the old man I came to visit family with my girlfriend. She’s pregnant and couldn’t eat much, but suddenly wanted fish from this river. He’s kind, so he lent me the net.”
Once it clicked, Amelia blew up with embarrassment and anger. Without thinking, she punched his arm.
