Chapter 473 My Condolences
Amelia froze.
She stared blankly at him, unable to process it for a moment.
Was that really the Ethan she knew?
The always distant, proud, and cold Ethan?
And now he was carefully explaining everything to her?
It was clear Fiona’s death had changed him more than she expected.
She noticed the stubble on his chin, and the words she had planned to refuse him with suddenly stuck in
her throat.
She nodded softly. “Alright. If that’s how it’s arranged…”
At her agreement, Ethan’s jaw relaxed a fraction, but it didn’t last long.
A self–mocking smile flickered at the corner of his lips.
“Amelia, you’re worried the media will snap photos and post them online.
“Is it because you think Mason might see them and get the wrong idea about us?”
Amelia shook her head firmly. “He’s not that petty.”
Seeing Ethan’s pupils contract sharply, Amelia met his gaze without dodging and added, “Besides, I told him about your request before I came. He didn’t object.”
Being trusted completely by Mason felt like a luxury Amelia had never experienced in her past marriage,
Ethan watched the faint warmth on her face as she spoke about another man, and each smile felt like a knife in his chest.
Bitter helplessness coursed through him, worse than jealousy alone.
He could see the difference between himself and Mason clearly–not just in money or status.
Ethan had pushed Amelia away repeatedly, while Mason had been there when she needed support the
most.
What he lost was the sincerity he’d once looked down on.
Ethan swallowed hard, his throat burning like it was filled with crushed bitter herbs.
He wanted to tear away that softness on her face that belonged to another man.
But in the end, he said nothing.

Chapter 473 My Condolences
He clenched his fists, holding on to the last shreds of control.
He knew it wasn’t the time.
“Don’t worry…” His voice was low, almost dreamy.
“This time… I’ll protect you properly.”
Amelia stiffened ever so slightly, but she no longer needed protection. Silence was her only reply.
When they entered the main hall, the air smelled of candles and flowers.
At the center, Fiona’s portrait rested quietly. She wore the same kind, smiling expression Amelia remembered.
As they stepped in, the murmurs of the crowd died instantly.
Dozens of eyes turned toward her from every direction.
Their gazes were still complicated, but the open disdain she’d gotten used to was gone.
Ethan’s promise seemed to have done its job.
Grace slowly walked over from the crowd.
She wore a black dress, her face full of sorrow.

Her eyes were puffy and red, the lines around them deeper than Amelia remembered, like she’d aged years overnight.
Amelia felt a faint ache in her chest.
She’d never been especially close to her former mother–in–law, but seeing her so lost and drained made her quietly sad.
Grace had cared for Fiona ever since marrying into the Rowes.
And when it came to dealing with her daughter–in–law, Fiona had never treated her badly.
Especially when Derek repeatedly embarrassed the family with his affairs, causing Grace to lose face as the lawful wife, Fiona had always stood firmly on her daughter–in–law’s side.
But after Fiona passed, that protection vanished.
Grace stopped in front of Amelia and looked at her silently for a few seconds.
