Chapter 479 The Call That Calmed the Storm
Amelia let out a sigh and forced herself to close her eyes.
Just as she was drifting off into a hazy half–sleep, her phone buzzed on the nightstand, lighting up with a video call request from Mason.
Something in Amelia’s chest quietly eased.
She took a deep breath, adjusted her expression so she wouldn’t look so drained, and then answered the call.
Mason’s handsome face immediately filled the screen.
He looked like he’d just gotten out of the shower–his hair still slightly damp, wearing a comfortable lounge set, with a corner of his study room visible in the background.
“Still awake?” His warm voice came through the speaker, tinged with a gentle smile.
But the very next second, that smile faded.
He studied Amelia’s face through the screen, his brow creasing. “What’s wrong? You don’t look right. Did someone… give you trouble?”
His gaze was sharp, as if he could see straight through the screen and into her heart.
Amelia rubbed at her cheeks, forcing a casual smile and keeping her voice as light as she could. “What? No, I’m just a little tired, that’s all.”
But no matter how hard she tried to smile and play it off, that brief flash of sadness in her eyes couldn’t escape someone as perceptive as Mason.
He leaned closer to the screen, as if trying to get a better look. “Is it about the estate, or bother you again?”
…
did Ethan come
His questions were so direct and dead–on that Amelia’s heart skipped a beat, and her eyes instinctively darted away from his searching gaze.
Being read that easily made her feel flustered and oddly guilty at the same time.
She reached up and touched her cheek, trying to deflect with a playful whine. “Oh come on, Mason. It’s already sinful enough that you’re this good–looking. Do you really have to be that smart too? A girl can’t have a single secret around you.”
She was trying to steer the conversation somewhere else.
Mason watched her little performance, and a helpless but affectionate smile flickered through his eyes before his expression softened.
He knew she didn’t want to talk about it, so he didn’t push. Instead, he changed the subject. “In a couple of days, my mother and I will be coming by to pay our respects to Fiona.”

“Wait, really?” Amelia’s eyes lit up for a moment, then clouded with confusion. “But Ethan said he didn’t make a wide announcement. It’s only been close family and a handful of … very close friends.”
In the Rowes‘ eyes, Mason probably didn’t quite qualify as a very close friend–especially not during a sensitive time like this.
Mason nodded with complete seriousness. “We’re your family, aren’t we?”
“My family?” Amelia blinked, then it clicked.
She and Ethan may have been divorced, but they had been married. And the Everetts had taken her in during the hardest time of her life. Though her relationship with them had grown complicated over the years for various reasons, in everyone else’s eyes, the Everetts were practically her adoptive family.
When she thought about it that way, Mason and his mother coming to pay their respects made perfect sense, both emotionally and socially.
“I guess … you’re right.” Amelia couldn’t help but laugh, and some of the heaviness in her chest eased.
Days of exhaustion and emotional strain had finally caught up with her.
She’d barely been talking with Mason for a few minutes before a yawn escaped her, her voice going thick and nasal. “Well then, I’ll see you when you get here. I’m going to sleep now. I’m absolutely beat.”
“Okay. Goodnight. Get some rest.” Mason’s voice was soft with warmth.
After hanging up, Amelia tossed her phone aside and was out the moment her head hit the pillow.
She slept deeply–unusually so–and didn’t stir until the next morning when bright daylight filled the room and the faint sounds of muffled weeping and hymns drifted in from outside the window.
She cracked her eyes open groggily and sat on the edge of the bed for a long while before her mind finally caught up.
The memory of Mason saying he’d be coming suddenly shot to the front of her thoughts.
If Mason and his mother were coming… didn’t that mean the Harlows might also catch wind of it and send someone?
The thought of those people instantly gave Amelia a throbbing headache.
Her relationship with the Harlows was something she wanted to face even less than her history with the Rowes.
She raked her fingers through her hair in frustration, forced the thoughts out of her head, and got out of bed. She changed into a simple, understated black dress, then stepped out of the room.
When she came downstairs to the main hall, the atmosphere was even heavier and more sorrowful than the day before.
Fiona’s body had been brought back from the funeral home and was now resting in a casket at the center

of the hall, where a temporary memorial had been set up.

The space was arranged with solemn dignity–white and black floral arrangements and mourning wreaths surrounded a framed portrait of Fiona.
The hall was filled with crying relatives and old friends of the Rowes who had come to pay their final respects. The sounds of hushed weeping and soft hymns blended together, pressing down on the chest like a weight that wouldn’t lift.
Ethan stood among them in a black suit, a white flower pinned to his lapel, his face drawn and exhausted but his posture still unyielding.
