Chapter 540 A Dinner Full of Tension
Cool of?
Was that what he called it? To her, it sounded like he just wanted her out of the way so he could catch up with the woman he had never really gotten over.
Lily glared at Tim, her eyes reddening, then turned and walked straight for the elevator without looking back.
Back in the office, Amelia saw Tim return alone, his face dark and Lily nowhere in sight. That was enough to tell her they had most likely ended in a full–blown fight.
Forcing a smile, Leigh said to her father and Amelia, “Sorry for the scene. Maybe… Ms. Rayne misunderstood something.”
Dylan, meanwhile, acted as if nothing had happened at all. Still smiling, he waved them along. “They’re young. A little conflict is perfectly normal. Come on, it’s getting late. Let’s go eat first. Mr. Clem, Ms. Harlow, this way.”
With Lily gone, the atmosphere only grew stranger.
As the project’s designer, Amelia couldn’t excuse herself from an occasion like this. It would have been far too rude. So she had no choice but to brace herself and go with Tim to the restaurant Dylan and Leigh had already reserved.
One exquisite dish after another was placed on the table, but no one seemed to have much appetite.
Taking advantage of a moment when she lifted her tea, Amelia slipped out her phone beneath the table and sent Lily a message.
“Are you back at the hotel?”
Tim sat beside her, visibly distracted. He barely touched his food. Instead, he sat in silence, drinking cup after cup of tea, only forcing himself to respond with a few brief answers whenever Dylan addressed him.
Leigh, meanwhile, seemed to have recovered from her earlier loss of composure. She worked hard at playing the warm, attentive host, offering Amelia food, introducing local attractions, and from time to time steering the conversation toward Tim with bits of harmless–sounding nostalgia.
“Tim, do you remember how much you hated celery back in school? I never thought your taste would change,” she said with a smile, as naturally as if they had never been apart,
Tim paused slightly, his teacup in hand, then answered without expression, “People change.”
With that one sentence, every possible road back to the past was cut off,
Dylan watched them from the side with a look that seemed almost thoughtful. Now and then, he added a comment or two, as though he were easing the mood, but it felt more like he was studying an interesting game already in motion.
A moment later, Amelia’s phone vibrated lightly beneath the table.

She picked it up and saw Lily’s reply.
‘Not back. I’m at a bar, having a drink to clear my head.”
A location pin followed. The bar was not far from their hotel.
Amelia frowned.
She knew Lily too well. The more hurt and miserable she was, the more she liked to cover it up by punishing herself and pretending to be strong. Letting her stay alone in a bar in an unfamiliar city was far :00 risky.
She quickly sent another message.
‘Don’t drink too much. Wait for me. I’ll come keep you company when this is over.”
Lily didn’t reply again.
Amelia put away her phone and looked up at the elegant dishes spread across the table and the people sitting there in hollow harmony. For the first time, the meal felt unbearably long.
At last, the dinner came to an end.
Dylan set down his utensils, dabbed the corner of his mouth with his napkin, and smiled with the polished warmth of a seasoned businessman. “The food really is excellent. Mr. Clem, Ms. Harlow, I hope the meal was to your satisfaction.”
Tim forced a slight movement at the corner of his mouth. His voice was rough when he answered, “You’re too kind, Mr. Dylan. The food was excellent.”
As soon as he finished speaking, his gaze drifted toward Amelia. The moment Dylan stopped talking, Amelia was already on her feet.
Doing her best to remain polite, she gave Dylan and Leigh a small nod. “Thank you very much for your hospitality, Ms. Lennon and Mr. Lennon. It’s getting late, and my friend is alone at the hotel. I’m a little worried about her, so I’ll be leaving first.”
Tim rose as well. He knew Amelia was worried about Lily, and he was just as anxious himself.
He was about to take the opportunity to say he would leave too when Dylan spoke again, calm and unhurried.
“Mr. Clem, no need to rush off just yet. We were short on time at the office earlier, and there are still a few contract details I’d like to go over while everything is fresh. Since the people in charge from both companies are here, we may as well settle as much as we can face–to–face and save ourselves the trouble of dragging things back and forth later.”
Tim stopped where he was, as if rooted to the spot.
Dylan’s words were perfectly reasonable. From a business standpoint, he had no good excuse to refuse
He glanced at Amelia, conflict plain on his face. On one side was a marriage crisis that needed immediate
