Chapter 544 What They Had Yet to Say
At the sound of the door opening, Lily looked over at once. But the moment she saw that Amelia was the only one standing there, the light in her eyes dimmed.
The change lasted no more than a second or two, so quick it could almost have been missed. But Amelia caught it anyway, that flicker of disappointment in Lily’s gaze.
Lily covered it up just as quickly. She looked back at Amelia and even managed a teasing smile. In a hoar voice, she said, “What is it? With that look on your face, did I scare you that badly?”
Seeing her pretend to be fine made Amelia’s nose sting, and her eyes reddened at once.
She hurried to the bedside, pulled over a chair, and took Lily’s cold hand in hers. “Of course you scared me. I was terrified. I thought you were just drunk and making a scene, and I was already trying to figure out how I was supposed to haul you back to the hotel. Then before I could even say anything, you just passed out. Do you have any idea how panicked I was?”
Trying to lighten the mood, she added in an exaggerated tone, “But if we’re talking about who got scared the inost, it was definitely that cute guy at the bar who asked for your number. The second you collapsed his face went white. He looked like he was about to cry on the spot, and he kept explaining to me, Miss, I just wanted her number. I didn’t do anything.”
Lily actually smiled at that. The expression was faint, but it softened her pale face. “Then he really was unlucky.”
A brief silence settled over the room.
Amelia looked at her, hesitated, then finally couldn’t help asking, “Lily, why haven’t you asked about Tim?
The smile faded from Lily’s face. She lowered her eyes, her voice edged with mockery. “Tim? Wasn’t he busy negotiating the contract? Why would he have time for me?”
Amelia sighed inwardly. She knew Lily could talk tough all she wanted, but deep down, she still cared.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have remembered it so clearly. Even the word contract came out sounding sharp
“Yes, he was talking about the contract,” Amelia said, following her lead. Then she calmly launched into a lie. “But after I called him and told him you’d passed out, he panicked and ran out of the restaurant in such a hurry that he tripped on the curb outside. He fell hard enough to rip his pants. He looked pretty miserable, so I was worried you’d wake up, see him like that, and start worrying. I told him to go back to the hotel, change into something clean, and come over after.”
Lily’s body went stiff. The hand resting on the blanket moved slightly, as though she wanted to say something, but in the end, she only pressed her lips together.
After a long moment, she let out a light, dismissive snort and turned her head away, her voice sull cool. “Why would I worry about him? It would serve him right if he broke his leg
That was what she said, but the hard line of her jaw had already seftened.
Amelia saw it and felt a little more at ease. She wanted to tell Lily about the pregnancy, but after another

Whether it brought joy or shock, whether they stayed together or fell apart, that was something the two them had to face themselves. As an outsider, she had already done enough.
So she swallowed the words and stayed with Lily instead, chatting with her on and off, trying to keep the mood from sinking too low.
Time passed slowly. About half an hour later, the door to the room opened quietly. Tim had finally arrived.
He had changed into clean casual clothes. He looked as though he had run all the way there. A sheen of sweat still clung to his forehead, his breathing was uneven, and his chest rose and fell slightly with each breath. His eyes were full of anxiety.
The moment Amelia saw him, she stood and gave him a look before heading for the door.
As she passed by him, she lowered her voice and said, “I told her you were rushing over and took a fall, s you went back to change. Other than that, I didn’t say anything. You should tell her yourself.”
Tim paused and turned his head, looking at Amelia for a long moment.
‘Okay. Thank you.”
Amelia nodded, said nothing more, and walked out, gently closing the door behind her to leave the room to the two of them.
From the moment he stepped inside, Tim’s gaze had locked onto Lily and stayed there.
Lily shifted slightly under that stare. In an even tone, she asked, “What is it? The way all of you are acting, don’t tell me I’ve got some terminal illness.”
