Chapter 546 No Easy Choice
All of that was true, but it was not the whole truth.
Lily was a lawyer. It was a high–pressure profession, unforgiving and relentless, one that allowed no room for slackness.
She had started as an unknown rookie at a law firm and fought her way up step by step, relying on talent, grit, and sheer determination until she had finally earned a name for herself in the field, along with real credibility and respect. She had worked too hard for that path not to value it.
If she stepped away now to have a child, her career would be interrupted for at least one or two years. By the time she tried to return, the industry outside would already have changed. Everything she had built could be gone.
But how was she supposed to say that to Tim?
How could she tell him without sounding selfish and cold, like a woman willing to end an innocent life for the sake of her career?

As the battle inside her raged on, Tim looked at her deeply.
‘It’s okay, Lily. I’ll be with you through all of it. Everything you’re worried about, I can solve. If you don’t want to work anymore, I’ll take care of you.
‘Buy whatever you want. And after the baby is born, if you feel your career has hit a wall, I’ll help you open your own law firm. You can choose the best team in the industry, and I’ll bring you all the clients and resources you need. You won’t have to worry about anything. Okay?”
Lily stared at him as if she were seeing him for the first time. Then she laughed.
‘Tim, what are you even talking about? If I’d heard something like this right after I graduated, I probably would’ve been so moved I cried. I would’ve thought you were some hero sent to save me.
‘But hearing it now only makes me more anxious.”
She slowly looked away from him and turned toward the window, where there was nothing outside but darkness.
“Tim, I know you’ve always wanted to be a father. But I don’t know if I can give you that right now.”
Her fingertips unconsciously picked at the thin hospital blanket.
She knew very well how much Tim wanted a child. That was exactly why she felt so torn.
Her career, her sense of self, and the life that might be coming into the world were locked in a brutal struggle inside her.
“If you can’t accept that, then maybe we can-”
“Don’t even think about it.”

Tim cut her off before she could finish.

“I’m not some narrow–minded idiot. Do you think I’d lose my mind just because there’s no child? Is that the kind of person you think I am?”
He drew in a hard breath, trying to steady his voice, but the tremor and hoarseness in it betrayed how close he was to falling apart.
He reached for her hand again and held it tightly.
“Lily, I’ve told you before. I respect your decision. I did then, I do now, and I always will.”
For a brief moment, something in Lily loosened. But then her gaze drifted to Tim’s eyes, red–rimmed from the effort of holding himself together, and her heart jolted.
Her body trembled faintly with it. In that instant, Lily suddenly felt that maybe she was cruel too.
In the end, she closed her eyes.
“Call the doctor.”
Tim said nothing. He bit down hard, then finally gave a silent nod.
Letting go of her hand, he stood up, walked to the door, and pressed the call button on the wall.
The doctor who came in a moment later was young, a woman with a professional smile and a chart in hand. She clearly already knew what they wanted to discuss.
She first asked Lily a few polite questions about how she was feeling, then got to the point.
“Ms. Rayne, based on your current condition, we wouldn’t recommend terminating the pregnancy right
now.
“You experienced signs of a threatened miscarriage today due to severe emotional distress and heavy alcohol intake. Although your condition is stable for the moment, your body has already been affected, You also have a naturally colder constitution, and the collapse today further drained your strength.
“If you undergo an abortion procedure at this stage, it could cause significant damage to the uterine lining and increase the risk of infection.
“So from a medical standpoint, our recommendation is that you go home, focus on recovery, and reconsider the decision only after your body has fully stabilized. Of course, that is only our professional advice. The final decision is yours.”
Amelia had no idea what Tim and Lily ended up saying to each other about whether to keep the baby.
When she arrived at the hospital the next day, she sensed at once that something had changed the moment she opened the door.
Inside the room, Tim was sitting in the chair by the bed, head lowered, concentrating on peeling an apple
with a fruit knife.
