Chapter 547 The Fear of Becoming Strangers

Tim’s movements were slow, almost mechanical. The peel came away in one long, unbroken strip, curling down like an endless sigh.

Lily sat propped against the headboard, staring blankly out the window.

They were in the same room, only a few feet apart, yet it felt as though an invisible sheet of glass stood between them. The feeling was deeply unsettling.

In Amelia’s memory, even when they were giving each other the cold shoulder, there had always been tension humming underneath. But now that tension was gone. In its place was something dead and still. It was as if they had gone from an intimate married couple to a man and woman on the verge of parting ways, strangers who could barely be bothered to keep up

appearances.

Lily, how are you feeling?Amelia asked as she walked in.

Tim’s hand paused over the apple. He looked up and forced a smile. You’re here.

Lily’s gaze shifted from the window. Only when it landed on Amelia did her eyes seem to come alive again. Why are you here so early?

Tim cut the peeled apple into small pieces, stuck toothpicks into them, and silently set the plate on the bedside table. Then he stood up and said in a hoarse voice, I’m going to take care of the discharge paperwork.

Lily only gave a quiet hum. She didn’t even lift her eyes.

Amelia couldn’t hold back any longer. You twodid you fight again?

Lily shook her head. No.

That only deepened Amelia’s unease. After thinking it over, she tried another question, one that mattered even more. Then did he explain about Leigh?

When the words left her mouth, Amelia expected the usual trace of sarcasm to appear on Lily’s face. Instead, Lily’s expression remained perfectly flat.

It doesn’t matter anymore,” she said.

Amelia froze. What could have happened to make Leigh, the fuse that had set off fight after fight between them, suddenly not matter anymore?

Lily offered no further explanation, and seeing her like this, Amelia couldn’t bring herself to press.

That morning, after the discharge papers were completed, Tim and Amelia went together to Dylan’s company and formally signed the contract that had been hanging in limbo.

Leigh never appeared the entire time. It seemed she was avoiding them on purpose.

Once the signing was done, they prepared to return to Eldoria.

Amelia still hadn’t forgotten how badly Lily had suffered from motion sickness on the trip there, and Tim had clearly thought of it too.

Worried that Lily’s body wouldn’t handle the ride, he made a call and had the Eldoria branch send over an exceptionally comfortable nanny van. Inside the spacious vehicle, he had also prepared plenty of food.

This time Lily didn’t get carsick. She silently accepted the food Tim handed her and ate. From beginning to end, she didn’t say a single word to him.

Tim sat beside her the whole way, keeping quiet and not daring to disturb her. The car rolled back into Eldoria in complete silence.

Tim had the driver drop Amelia off first at Mason’s house.

Mason had gone to Kaia’s place that day to help take care of Evan, so Amelia had the house to herself. She stood at the door and watched the van drive away, her thoughts tangled in a knot.

She badly wanted to talk to Mason about Lily and Tim and how worried she was, but thinking of how stretched thin he already was, she couldn’t bear to add her own troubles to his.

Back in her room, the scenes from the day kept replaying in her head.

At its core, her failed marriage to Ethan had been a onesided fever dream, her attempt to salvage a marriage that had never had any real foundation of love. The ending had been miserable, but not surprising.

Lily and Tim were different. They clearly loved each other.

And yet even two people who loved each other that much had still ended up here, with one problem after another, the distance between them only growing wider.

The thought filled Amelia with a sudden, quiet dread. She couldn’t help wondering whether she and Mason might one day become like this too if they got married.

Maybe after the first rush of sweetness faded, they would start fighting over trivial things, worn down little by little by ordinary life until the passion was gone, and they became strangers who knew each other better than anyone, drifting farther apart with each passing day.

Just as she was lost in those anxious thoughts, her phone screen lit up. It was a message from

Mason.

Back yet?

Amelia replied with a simple yes.

There’s a surprise hidden in your closet. Go look.

A surprise?

Puzzled, Amelia climbed off the bed, walked to the closet, and pulled open the door. Hanging beside her clothes was a large white box.

Curious, she took it down and opened it.

Inside was a brandnew professional digital art set, resting there quietly. From the drawing tablet to the pressuresensitive pen, every piece was the latest model she had been wanting for a very long time.
