Clara opened the door. When she saw Amelia standing there alone, the carefully arranged smile on her face faltered for the briefest moment. Her gaze instinctively flicked past Amelia, searching behind her.
“You came by yourself? Aren’t you seeing Mason? For a family dinner this important, why didn’t he come with you?”
“He had something to take care of. He couldn’t make it.” Amelia kept her explanation brief.
She was already prepared for Clara to launch into another round of criticism.
But to her surprise, Clara didn’t turn sharp the way she usually did. Instead, she quickly put the smile back on and waved the matter away with unnatural generosity. “Oh, then next time. We’ll invite him over another day when there’s a chance.”
That unusual reaction immediately put Amelia on guard. She followed Clara into the living room. Raising her voice toward the second floor, Clara called out, “Beatrice, come downstairs. Amelia’s here.”
A moment later, Beatrice came down in expensive loungewear, moving at an unhurried pace.
Her eyes swept the room. When she realized Amelia had come alone, the same flash of disappointment that had crossed Clara’s face appeared in hers too.
Amelia caught it, and her suspicion deepened. In an almost casual tone, she asked, “Wasn’t I supposed to meet Beatrice’s boyfriend? Where is he?”
Clara immediately smiled and explained, “Oh, something important came up at the last minute. He had a meeting, so we changed it to another day. You know how it is with people doing big business. They’re always busy.”
The excuse was far too flimsy. Amelia was almost certain now that this dinner had been arranged as a trap.
Beatrice walked over to Amelia and let her gaze drop to the gift bags by her feet. The curve of her mouth held undisguised disdain. “Honestly, Amelia, you’re a director now, and you’ve got Mason backing you. How are you still bringing home such cheap things? Aren’t you embarrassed someone might laugh if word got out?”
Amelia couldn’t be bothered to argue. She only lifted her eyes and said evenly, “If you don’t want them, throw them away.”
“Look at the way you talk…” Clara immediately stepped in to smooth things over, shooting Amelia a reproachful glance before turning to Beatrice. “That’s not what Amelia meant. All

right, all right, don’t just stand there.” As she spoke, she signaled to a nearby maid. “Take these to the back.”
The maid hurried over and carried away the gifts that had just been sneered at.
An awkward silence settled over the living room.
Trying to fill it, Clara said, “Your father and grandfather had to go to the office for something urgent. They’ll be back in a little while. Just sit and wait.”
Amelia nodded. She happened to need a chance to be alone. So she took the opportunity and asked, “Can I go rest in my old room for a bit?”
The moment the words left her mouth, the smile on Clara’s face froze. Her expression turned awkward.
She stood there for several seconds before forcing out a dry laugh. “Well… your room… it was turned into storage a while ago. You know how many things there are in this house, and you never really come back to stay. It felt like a waste to leave it empty…”
Amelia listened quietly to the explanation. At her sides, her fingers slowly curled inward on their own. Her face remained calm as she looked at Clara’s stiff expression.
She should have expected this, shouldn’t she?
In this house, anything connected to her was treated like a contaminant, something they couldn’t wait to erase and cover over. What was one room compared to that?
“It’s fine.” Amelia tugged at her lips, but there was no warmth in it. “I’ll just go take a look.”
With that, she ignored Clara’s half–started expression and turned away, heading up the familiar winding staircase.
She didn’t go straight to the room she had once occupied. Instead, she walked all the way to the far end of the hallway and stopped in front of the most inconspicuous door there.
This was where she had been banished after Beatrice came home. The smallest room in the house, the darkest one too, a place that barely saw sunlight year–round.
Amelia raised a hand, wrapped it around the cold doorknob, and turned it gently. The door swung open.
A stale smell of dust and damp, old belongings rushed out at her, making her frown.
What she saw inside was even worse than she had imagined. This could no longer be called a room. It was a dumping ground.

Outdated designer bags, worn–out formal dresses, broken high heels, discarded cardboard boxes, and random junk had all been piled together in a chaotic heap. There was barely any place to stand.
Amelia’s gaze worked its way through the mess and landed on the deepest part of the room.
Even now, she could still make out traces of what she had once left behind. A desk, carved up until it was nearly unrecognizable. And beside it, a chair with one broken leg.
