549 What She Came Back for

Once all the formalities were complete, Amelia signed the last page. Then she stood and left with her lawyer without lingering.
Ethan didn’t move. He stayed where he was, watching her receding figure with dry, tired eyes.
She walked away so decisively, without even a trace of reluctance, as if the years of marriage between them really had become nothing more than an old chapter she could close without a second thought.
The regret and unwillingness inside him still clamored to be heard. He wanted, with sudden reckless force, to call after her and ask, We may be divorced, but could we at least still be friends?
But when the words reached his lips, he swallowed them back.
He knew very well that to Amelia now, any tie to him was a burden. His presence would only disturb the peace she had fought so hard to regain.
Slowly, Ethan withdrew his gaze and gave a self–mocking pull at the corner of his mouth.
Better to wait a little longer.
First, he needed to deal with everything in front of him. First, he needed to become someone better. Maybe then he would finally have the right to stand before her again in a way that didn’t feel like a burden.
In truth, Amelia had come back for more than just that aggravating call from Clara. She had another purpose, one she had told no one.
She wanted to look for the gold locket engraved with a stag, the one she had worn since childhood and then somehow lost.
Ever since the truth about Beatrice’s background had started to come to light, questions had wrapped around Amelia’s heart like vines.
Beatrice had only said that she had lived in an orphanage for a time before being adopted by an ordinary family, and that those people were not Amelia’s biological parents. So who were Amelia’s real parents?
And who had gone to such lengths to switch her with Beatrice in the first place?
Amelia no longer cared much for blood ties themselves, but if that jade ring truly was the key to uncovering the truth of her origins, then she needed to find it. At the very least, she wanted to know where she had come from.
That weekend, Amelia bought a few gifts at the mall as a formality, then drove back to Harlow Estate. She parked in front of the house.

Chapter 549 What She Came Back for

Still seated in the car, she looked at the lavish, cold villa before her and drifted for a moment.
The last time she had walked out of this place had been at David’s birthday banquet.
Beatrice had set her up, and David had called her into his study and struck her palms hard with a ruler. Even now, the humiliation and pain of that moment felt branded into her skin.
After steadying herself, Amelia got out of the car with the gifts in hand.
