Chapter 580 An Unwelcome Guest
Simshed
Nora shot up from her chair. Her eyes went wide as she blurted out, “Wilda? What are you doing here?”
Wilda looked around the small cottage. Her gaze was calm but sharp.
“Why?” she asked lightly. “Am I not welcome here? I came to see how Evan is recovering.”
As she spoke, her eyes flicked toward Amelia.
Amelia hadn’t seen Wilda in years. But the fear from the past never really left her. It felt carved into her bones.
That same heavy look. That same pressure. In an instant, it pulled her back to an afternoon long ago.
Back then, Wilda had looked at her just like this and said in a cold voice, “Someone from a family like yours isn’t good enough for Mason. Stay away from him.”
The same helpless, small feeling rushed back and swallowed her whole.
Without thinking, Amelia let go of Mason’s hand.
Mason felt the warmth in his palm disappear.
He turned his head sharply. Amelia’s face was pale. Her head was lowered. Her whole body seemed tense and uneasy.
He frowned and was about to say something, when the young woman who had been helping Wilda suddenly stepped forward with a smile.
She stood right between him and Amelia.
“Mason, Merry Christmas,” she said sweetly. Her tone was
as warm, like they were close.
Mason’s eyes turned cold. His voice was distant. “Phoebe?
Amelia was surprised too.
What a
are you doing here?”
Phoebe. Wasn’t she the woman Amelia once thought was Mason’s long–lost love? She and Lily had even talked about it before.
It turned out to be a misunderstanding. But the name had already stuck in Amelia’s mind.
Amelia lifted her head and quietly looked at her.
Phoebe had a striking kind of beauty–confident and hard to ignore. She was exactly the kind of woman people admired these days. Every move she made was smooth and polished, showing the manners she’d been raised with.
You could tell she came from money.
Phoebe noticed Amelia looking at her. She turned and gave her a polite smile, then nodded slightly.

Chapter 580 An Unwelcome Guest
Even with Mason’s cold question, Phoebe didn’t look embarrassed at all.
Her smile stayed the same. Her voice was gentle. “I was visiting Wilda,” she explained. ‘I heard the coming to see Evan. I didn’t want her traveling alone, so I came with her. I hope we didn’t interrupt anything.”
Evan, sitting in his wheelchair, was the first to speak again. He looked at Wilda and smiled softly. ‘Grandma you should’ve told us you were coming. The road is rough. Mason could’ve picked you up.”
Wilda clearly cared about her eldest grandson.
Her face softened a little. Her tone warmed. “It’s fine. Phoebe was with me. I can find my way.”
“Wilda, come on, it’s cold outside. Let’s get you inside,” Nora quickly said, stepping forward. She tried to ease the awkward tension.
Soon, Wilda was guided into the house, with Phoebe on one side and Nora on the other.
The dining room, which had been warm and lively just moments ago, suddenly felt crowded and tense.
The table was still full of freshly cooked food, carefully prepared for Amelia. Steam rose from every dish. But the warmth no longer reached anyone’s heart.
Amelia stood there, stiff. She didn’t know what to do. Should she sit down? Or find an excuse to leave?
Mason noticed her awkwardness. He walked straight to her, ignoring everyone else. He took her cool hand firmly and led her to a seat beside him.
Nora hurriedly set the table.
Phoebe sat down naturally next to Wilda. That spot faced Amelia and Mason directly.
“Evan, how have you been feeling lately?” Wilda asked as soon as she sat down. All her attention was on him. “Are the doctors here any good?”
“I’m much better,” Evan said with a smile. “If I keep up with rehab, there’s a good chance I’ll walk again.”
“That’s good,” Wilda said with a nod, looking relieved. She picked up a fork and added more food to his plate. “Eat up. You’ve lost too much weight.”
