Chapter 581 Rejected in Plain Sight
Phoebe jumped in at the perfect moment. “See? I told you Evan would pull through. He’s lucky. Wilda, you can stop worrying now.”
Her voice was gentle and smooth, easy to listen to.
You do have a way with words,” Wilda said, clearly pleased.
That meal felt endless to Amelia. She stayed tense the whole time and couldn’t relax for even a second. Her chest felt tight and heavy.
Wilda carried herself like the head of a big, powerful family. She guided the vibe with ease and kept the atmosphere in her control. She asked Evan about his recovery with warm concern. She smiled as she praised Nora’s cooking. She even chatted with Hayden about school, sounding sincerely interested.
She spoke to everyone at the table, except Amelia. It wasn’t an accident. It was intentional.
Amelia sat right there, but it felt like she wasn’t even there at all. Like she was invisible.
And that quiet kind of rejection hurt more than harsh words ever could.
When lunch finally ended, Amelia quickly packed her few things. There wasn’t much to pack anyway.
By the time she came downstairs with her suitcase, the air in the living room was still stiff and uneasy.
Mason stood up at once. He took the suitcase from her, then reached for her hand without thinking.
IИ take you home,” he said softly.
Those simple words were the only thing that made her feel a little better.
But before that comfort could settle in, Wilda spoke again. Calm, steady, and firm.
Mason,” she said slowly, holding her cup, “Phoebe doesn’t get to visit the countryside often. She’d like to look around. You know the area well. Take her out later.”
Her tone was light, but it wasn’t a suggestion. It was a command.
Then she paused, as if she had just remembered Amelia. “As for Amelia… just home. She’s an adult. She can go home on her own.”

Only then did she look up. Her cloudy but sharp eyes landed squarely on Amelia, full of pressure and judgment. “Amelia, you can, can’t you?”
It sounded like a question, but it wasn’t. It was a dismissal. Cold and
final.
Amelia’s face went pale. She gripped the hem of her clothes, her fingers turning cold.
Before she could say anything, Mason spoke.
This place isn’t big. If Phoebe wants to look around, she can do it herself within a few minutes. She doesn’t need me.”

His refusal was quick and clear.
He didn’t give anyone time to respond. He took Amelia’s cold hand again and turned toward the door.
“Stop!”
Wilda’s gaze dropped to their tightly linked hands. Her face darkened at once. She set her cup down with a sharp clink.
Mason stopped. He turned and stepped in front of Amelia, his tall frame shielding her completely.
His expression stayed calm. He met Wilda’s anger head–on, without a trace of fear.
“What are the two of you, exactly?” Wilda asked, her voice slow and sharp.
Phoebe, who had been sitting quietly and trying to behave like a proper guest, suddenly stiffened. Her expression changed at the question.
She clearly hadn’t seen this coming. Mason had always been known for being distant and uninterested in women. Yet now, he was openly standing with someone.
Her gaze flicked between Mason and Amelia, filled with curiosity and resentment.
Mason didn’t hesitate in the face of that question.
He tightened his grip on Amelia’s hand and faced everyone. “Amelia is my girlfriend.”
He paused, then added, his voice steady and firm, “She’s the one I’m going to marry.”
“No!”
Wilda cut him off at once. She shot to her feet, her voice sharp with anger. “I will not allow this!
“How can someone like you be with someone like her?” she snapped, her tone growing harsher. “She was adopted by us before. On paper, she’s practically your sister! If you two get involved, what will people say about our family?”
The accusation landed hard. Amelia’s whole body trembled. The color drained from her face.
But it didn’t stop
there.
Wilda pressed on, as if determined to say the cruelest thing possible. “And that’s not even the worst part,” she said coldly. “She’s been married before. A woman thrown out by the Rowes. Our family will never accept a divorcee.”
