“I still don’t think she’s worthy of marrying into our family. She’s not fit to be an Everett.”

Wilda’s prejudice was like old tree roots, twisted deep into the ground. It wasn’t something Evan could shake by laying out a few facts.
She admitted that Amelia’s past was sad. She could even feel a little sympathy. But accepting her into a top family like theirs? That was a line she couldn’t cross.
Evan looked at Wilda’s face, full of stubborn pride. He knew her views were set in stone. They wouldn’t change overnight.
Arguing more would only make things worse.
He let out a quiet sigh. His eyes moved past her, landing on the large estate behind her. It looked grand, but cold. “Grandma,” he said calmly, “how long are you planning to stay here? There are still things at the estate that need your attention.”
He smoothly changed the subject.
It worked.

Wilda’s thoughts shifted. She sighed. “It’s all because of Pedro. That boy called me a few days ago. Said he found a girlfriend and wanted me to meet her, give my opinion.”
She shot Evan a look. “Honestly, none of you give me any peace. Mason is a handful, and now Pedro is the same.”
Evan understood at once.
Pedro had been getting close to Beatrice lately.
This didn’t feel like a simple relationship.
And those harsh rumors about Amelia that Wilda kept repeating–now that he thought about it, they were probably tied to Beatrice.
His eyes darkened slightly, but his face stayed calm.
He glanced at the sky. The winter sun was already sinking.
“It’s getting late, Grandma. Let’s head back. It’s windy out here. You might catch a cold.”
He said it gently, then turned his wheelchair and started moving.
Wilda followed behind him, still muttering. “If I had known, I would’ve kept a closer eye on all of you. Evan, don’t you dare follow your brother’s path. If your legs recover, there will be plenty of good girls waiting for you to choose from.”
Evan gave a faint, self–mocking smile. He tilted his head back and looked at the pale sky. His eyes were calm, almost distant.
“It’s not that simple, Grandma. No one’s lining up for someone like me. Even if I recover, I was disabled for years, and I have a child.”

He said it lightly, but it made Wilda’s heart sink.

“That’s different!” she snapped, her tone turning sharp again. She hurried forward, catching up to his wheelchair. “You’re the eldest grandson! Your status matters! Don’t you dare make the same mistake as Mason and pick some random woman! If you do, you’ll drive me crazy!”
Evan frowned slightly. He knew she was already worked up. There was no point arguing now.
“Mm,” he replied softly, and said nothing more.
The two of them walked back along the path in silence, one in front, one behind.
After they were gone, the back door slowly opened a crack.
Kaia pecked out.
Her eyes followed their figures as they disappeared into the distance.
“So, in her eyes,” she whispered, her voice barely audible, “I’m probably just another ‘random woman‘ too.”
She let out a bitter smile, then gently closed the door, locking all those quiet sorrows inside.
A few days later, the gloomy mood had finally lifted. Warm winter sunlight poured into the living room through the large windows.
Amelia sat on the couch beside Mason. The two of them were discussing when to move into their new house. For a brief moment, everything felt calm. Then, the doorbell rang–sharp and sudden.
They exchanged a glance. Both looked confused.
Who would come at this time?
A maid went to open the door. Soon, a slightly nervous greeting came from the entrance.
Then, two unexpected figures appeared. The warmth in the room seemed to break apart instantly.
Wilda stood at the front, her usual proud expression on her face.
Phoebe followed behind her.
Before Amelia could say anything, Wilda spoke first. “Evan talked to me,” she said. “He thinks there may have been some misunderstandings between us. Since he asked, I can’t be too harsh. So, I’ve decided to give you a chance. I’ll spend some time with you and see for myself.”
