Mason laughed at that. He lowered his head, pressed a kiss to the crown of her head, and murmured, “My
little Amelia,

“eed,
though, was that Amelia would walk straight into Mason’s room that night.
never
The moment she stepped inside, Mason closed the door behind her.
He turned to face her, his expression serious as he made a quiet proposal. “How about we move into the new place a little early?”
Over there, it would just be the two of them. No headache–inducing guests, no endless etiquette, no ugly little schemes.
“There aren’t any guest rooms there anyway. They can’t exactly chase us down.”
Amelia was tempted.
But she reined herself in quickly, her voice hesitant. “But… that wouldn’t be a good look, would it? Your grandmother already doesn’t like me. If we take off now, she’ll be sure I did it on purpose. She’ll only hate me more after that.”
Mason let out a sigh. “You really don’t know her yet? That kind of person only ever believes the version of the truth she’s already decided on. It doesn’t matter how well you do–she’ll look the other way anyway. Back when my dad married my mom, she wasn’t happy either. No matter how good my mom was to her after the wedding, no matter how much she poured into this family, my grandmother couldn’t stand the sight of her. She was convinced my mom wasn’t good enough for my dad.
“It was only after my dad died young–when she realized the company was going to end up in my brother’s and my hands someday–that she softened toward my mom. On the surface, anyway. Deep down, I don’t think she ever really accepted her.”
Amelia fell quiet for a moment. She thought it through, then said slowly, “Then… let’s give it another day or
two.
“If she really crosses a line and starts making things difficult for me, we’ll leave. Whatever she wants to think after that is
to her.”

That was Amelia’s line in the sand.
She could be patient. She could give ground. But she would not be trampled on.
He stepped forward and gathered her into his arms, resting his chin on the top of her head. “Whatever you want,” he said softly.
Amelia nestled closer, the corners of her mouth lifting. She stretched up and kissed the side of his face, her voice light and playful. “All right, Mason, stop sulking.”
She patted his chest lightly and slipped out of his arms. “I’m going to take a shower. Let’s get an early night tonight.”

Mason watched her disappear into the bathroom with her cheerful little stride and thought, Not a chance I’m sleeping early.
Tonight, he had all the time in the world to make up for everything she’d swallowed that day.
Humming softly, Amelia ran herself a long, hot shower, letting the heat wash away the exhaustion in her body and the tightness in her chest.
She was wrapping herself in a towel, about to step out, when there was a knock at Mason’s bedroom door.
The knock came out of nowhere.
Amelia froze. Through the bathroom door, she caught the muffled sound of Mason’s voice. “Who is it?”
“It’s me, Mason.” The voice on the other side was soft and delicate. Phoebe.
Mason’s brow furrowed. He walked to the door, hesitated for a second, then reached out and pulled it open.
Phoebe was standing in the hallway, exactly as he’d suspected.
She was wearing a thin silk slip, with a cardigan thrown carelessly over the top. Her figure was half–hidden, half on display.
Mason stayed in the doorway, a chill radiating off him.
He didn’t bother softening his face. “What is it? It’s late.”
Phoebe’s eyes flicked past him into the room, scanning quickly. When she confirmed there was no sign of Amelia, the sting of his cold reception was replaced by a small, private thrill.
It made her bolder. She blinked up at him, wide–eyed, the picture of innocence and vulnerability. “Can I… come in? There’s something I’d like to say to you in private.”
The invitation in her voice was unmistakable.
Mason’s frown deepened. He was about to refuse outright when Phoebe, as if she’d already anticipated it, slipped neatly past him and into the room before he could get the word out.
As she brushed past, she let her body linger against his for the briefest second, a deliberate little graze meant to provoke.
It only made Mason angrier. His expression darkened.
He didn’t shut the door, making the boundary between them crystal clear.
“Ms. Jewell, coming to a man’s room this late at night–if anyone sees you, it won’t look good for you. And it won’t look good for the Everetts, either.”
