Chapter 597 The Failed Trap
Phoebe turned to face him, tugging the loose cardigan a little lower on her shoulders.

She tilted her head back to look up at him, her gaze wistful. “But Mason… have you forgotten? That camping trip we took years ago–1 came to your room then too, didn’t I? İ
“I know you’re worried Ms. Harlow might get the wrong idea, that she’ll be angry with you. But we aren’t doing anything. There’s nothing going on. Why can’t she trust you? Are her feelings for you really so fragile that they can’t survive the smallest test?”
Mason listened to her go on and found the whole thing grating,
He glanced toward the bathroom. The door was shut tight, and there wasn’t a sound coming from inside. He knew Amelia well enough to guess she was listening to every word.
A cold smile flickered through him. Good.
His voice went flat. “Get to the point. What do you actually want?”
Seeing that he hadn’t thrown her out yet, Phoebe assumed her charm was finally working. She dropped the fragile damsel act and smoothed her expression. “It’s like this, Mason. Our friends from overseas are organizing a big reunion. They wanted me to ask whether you and Tim would have time to come.”
Mason refused without hesitation. “I don’t. And Tim’s wife is pregnant–he doesn’t either.”
“What?” Phoebe let out a theatrical gasp, as if she’d just heard something impossible. “When did Tim get married? And his wife is already pregnant? My God, why didn’t he tell any of us? That’s not very nice of him, is it!”
Mason watched the performance and cut her off, irritated. “He’s not that close to any of you. Why would he have to tell you?”
Back in the bathroom, Amelia trusted Mason completely–but the saccharine, two–faced act on the other side of the door still left a bitter taste in her mouth.
Then she heard Mason shut Phoebe down cold, and she nearly burst out laughing into her towel.
Meanwhile, while Mason and Phoebe were occupied in that bedroom, Wilda wasn’t idle either.
Sticking to the plan, she made her way to Amelia’s room and knocked on the door.
The pretext was inviting Amelia out for a little walk to help her digest dinner.
But no matter how long she kept knocking, there was no answer at all.
Even the strongest relationship could crack under the weight of a carefully staged scene witnessed with one’s own eyes.
That simple, reliable truth was the Wo

foundation of the plan Wilda and Phoebe had set in motion for
Phoebe, in her barely–there slip, would knock on Mason’s door late at night, creating the ambiguous picture of a man and a woman alone together behind closed doors. Then, Wilda would come strolling along with Amelia at exactly the right moment, so Amelia could “happen” to walk in on the scene.

At that point, no explanation would be enough. Once the seed of doubt was planted, it would take root, grow, and eventually tear the trust between Mason and Amelia apart.

they were playing on.
At the other end of the hallway, as Wilda came stalking back from Amelia’s silent, empty room with a dark look on her face, she ran straight into Phoebe, who had just been unceremoniously kicked out of Mason’s.
“What happened?” Wilda’s voice dropped low, sharp with frustration.
The moment Phoebe saw her, the tough f
she’d been holding up collapsed. She choked out a sob, voice trembling with hurt. “Mrs. Everett… he threw me out.”
“Threw you out?” Wilda’s frown tightened. “Then what about Amelia? When you went in, was she in there?”
“I didn’t see her.” Phoebe shook her head. Then something seemed to occur to her, and she added bitterly, “But when I walked in, the bathroom door was closed. There wasn’t a sound from inside… and Mason even deliberately glanced over in that direction!”
That single sentence hit Wilda like a bolt of lightning, burning the fog out of her mind in an instant.
The room where no one had answered her knocking. The silent, shut bathroom door on Mason’s side.
Everything clicked into place at once.
Amelia had never gone back to her own room. She had been with Mason the entire time!
Wilda’s face went cold at the realization.
Not only had her whole plan collapsed–she had been played for a fool.
That little Amelia had been hiding in that bathroom the whole time, listening to Phoebe make a fool of herself on the other side of the door. God only knew how hard she’d been laughing at them in there.
“Well… aren’t you something, Amelia.” Wilda’s chest rose and fell with fury. The words came out through
