Phoebe listened as he made his deferential promises, a cold, smug smile forming at the corner of her
mouth.
That evening.
Amelia had barely stepped out of the building when she spotted Mason’s car. His window was rolled down, and he was leaning slightly to one side, watching her with quiet, warm eyes.
She walked over quickly, pulled open the door, slid into the passenger seat, and tossed her bag into the back.
“You’re early today,” she said as she buckled her seatbelt. “I was expecting to wait a while.”
“I wanted to see you sooner.” Mason started the engine. “And I don’t want to go home for dinner.”
Amelia turned her head to glance at him, a teasing lilt in her voice. “If we don’t go back, your grandmother isn’t going to be happy. You’re not worried she’ll decide I’m the one putting ideas in your head?”
Mason suddenly pulled the car to a stop at a red light. He turned in his seat, his expression completely serious, and reached over to cup her face in both hands.
“Ms. Harlow,” he said, dark eyes fixed on her, “you are not the Everett granddaughter–in–law yet. You are Mason’s girlfriend. So the only person you ever need to worry about keeping happy is me. That’s it.”
His expression was so serious, so solemn, that he looked like he was reading out some kind of oath.
Amelia stared at him for a beat, then broke into a helpless laugh.
Warmth spread from his palms on her face straight down into her chest.
“Are you…” she said, her eyes dancing, “jealous of your own grandmother now?”
Mason admitted it without hesitation. “Yes.”
He let go of her face and put his hands back on the wheel, eyes forward. But the displeasure in his voice was unmistakable. “I don’t like watching her treat you the way she does. Even if she’s my grandmother.”
She knew being stuck in the middle was harder on Mason than he let on. Still, he’d never once made her bear the brunt of it.
“Don’t worry, though,” Mason went on. “I’ll figure out a way to send her back to the countryside to rest in the next couple of days. That way, she won’t have the energy to keep meddling in our lives.”
“Okay.” Amelia nodded softly.
She had no doubt Mason could pull it off. But something in her gut told her Wilda wouldn’t be so easy to get rid of this time.
She was like a splinter lodged deep in flesh. Until it was pulled out, it was always going to be trouble.
The car pulled up to a steakhouse.
They had just settled into their reserved seats when Mason’s phone rang at the worst possible moment.
He glanced at the caller ID and frowned.

He swiped to answer. “Grandma.”

Wilda’s voice came through loud and sharp. “Mason, where are you? Do you know what time it is? Why aren’t you back for dinner yet?”
“We’re eating out. You don’t need to wait up for us.” Mason kept his answer short, his eyes stayed on Amelia, as if he could steady her with his gaze alone.
“Eating out? So now you’re deciding you don’t want this old woman hanging around the house in your way?”
Mason was quiet for a second, then said flatly into the phone, “You already know the answer. Why ask?”
“You-!” Wilda was clearly stung. Her breathing came fast on the other end of the line. Within seconds, she had latched onto a new target, redirecting the blame with perfect accuracy. “This is Amelia’s idea, isn’t it? I knew it. Ever since she showed up, you’ve been more and more disobedient! What kind of spell has she put on you?”
Mason’s brows drew together, and his voice dropped. “Grandma, stop pinning everything on Amelia. I’m the one who didn’t want to come back. It has nothing to do with her. Whatever you have to say, say it to me.”
“You! You’re a stubborn fool!” Wilda snapped, and apparently decided there was no point dragging it out further. She hung up on him with a hard click.
Mason set the phone down and sighed.
He looked across the table at Amelia and spread his hands slightly. “Well, looks like my grandmother is blaming you for this one too.”
Amelia laughed at the look on his face. She picked up her glass of lemonade, took a sip, tilted her head, and fluttered her lashes in mock innocence. “Poor me. So unfairly accused.”
“Poor, unfairly accused Ms. Harlow,” Mason said, playing along. The tenderness in his eyes was almost overflowing.
Amelia set her glass aside and poked at the salad on her plate, her voice light. “It’s fine, though. It makes sense. You’re the Everett family’s pillar now. She has no real way to go after you, so of course, she has to tell herself it’s the “femme fatale” in the background whispering in your ear. I’ll take the blame on that one. It’s not like it’s undeserved in her eyes.”
