Amelia was acting like it was all water under the bridge, as if Wilda’s harassment was just some harmless little joke.
But Mason knew her. The more nonchalant she seemed, the more it was weighing on her.
He reached across the table and wrapped his hand around hers. “I’m sorry you’re having to go through this,” he said quietly.
Amelia shook her head and turned her hand so their fingers laced together. “As long as you’re next to me, nothing about it feels unfair.”
A warm dinner alone could only do so much to push back the cloud hanging over both of them.
The car rolled smoothly back up to the Everett estate.
It was already late. Most of the house was dark. Only the main building–theirs–still had a light on in the living room.
Mason parked, unbuckled his seatbelt, and glanced over at Amelia. “We’re here.”
Amelia nodded, but for no reason she could put a
to, her stomach sank.
They walked into the living room side by side and, sure enough, Wilda was sitting upright on the couch. A cashmere throw was draped over her shoulders, and a cup of long–cold tea sat untouched on the coffee table in front of her.
She was sitting perfectly still, her gaze fixed on the entryway with a dark, brooding intensity. She was, very clearly, waiting for them.
Mason’s brow drew together at once, and his voice came out sharper than usual. “It’s this late. Why aren’t you in bed? What is it this time?”
His tone wasn’t kind. There was an obvious pushback against his grandmother’s silent pressure tactics. To his surprise, though, Wilda didn’t snap this time. She just lifted her eyes slowly.
“Pedro is in Eldoria too these last couple of days. I told him about your situation. He wants you to bring Amelia to dinner with him tomorrow night.”
Mason’s brows lifted slightly, suspicion flickering in his eyes. “You’re sure? He asked me… to bring Amelia?”
Pedro was Mason’s cousin–roughly his age, but worlds apart from Mason in terms of standing and ability within the family.
The two of them weren’t close. They were more like distant acquaintances who happened to share a last
name.
For someone Mason barely interacted with to suddenly extend a dinner invitation–and ask specifically for Amelia to come along–was unusual, to say the least.
Wilda let out a cold, ambiguous little snort. “That’s right. Don’t think I’m some stiff old woman who hates everything, either.”
As she spoke, her eyes settled back on Amelia. Her next words came slowly, deliberately. “I’m just… helping

And with that, Wilda pushed herself up, smoothed out the throw over her shoulders, and walked steadily off toward her own room.
Amelia felt her eyelid twitch.
This was going to be another trap dressed up as dinner.
Wilda’s whole attitude tonight had been strange. She’d abandoned the head–on confrontation in favor of something colder and sneakier. What exactly was she planning?
Amelia pushed the unease to the back of her mind and went to work as usual the next day.
The drama from the night before had left her rattled, but work was the place where she kept her balance and her independence.
She had only just finished handling a few emails when the internal line on her desk rang. It was Tim.
“Amelia, come to my office for a minute.” Tim sounded noticeably upbeat.
When she walked in, Tim was already standing behind his desk. He held out a project brief to her. “Take a look. A big contract just came in, and they’re in a hurry. Their standards for the design are extremely high. I thought about it, and in this whole design department, the only person I’d feel comfortable handing this to is you.”
Amelia took the file and started scanning it. It was a fashion show project called Eastern Grandeur, commissioned by a fashion group registered overseas.
She caught the wrinkle in the logic quickly. “Mr. Clem, for a rush–job high–end project like this, and a foreign company at that, you’d normally expect them to go straight to a well–known studio with international experience. Why take such a long way around to land on us?”
“Good question.” Tim had clearly already thought about it. He smiled as he explained. “The theme for this show is a new Cindara–style look with a real, traditional soul–deeply rooted in Cindaran culture. They wanted to partner with a local company that genuinely understands Cindaran culture, not just someone who can approximate it. And… The project was referred to us by an old college friend of mine. That connection is solid. I also had someone run a background check on the company. They’re clean. No red flags.”
To emphasize his point, he tapped the final page of the letter of intent.“Look. We haven’t even signed the formal contract yet–we’ve only agreed on initial terms–and they’ve already paid a very large deposit up front, no hesitation. You don’t get clients this agreeable anymore.”
