No Sex for Six Years Because of Her? I'm Done novel Chapter 638

Chapter 638 Don’t Look Back

Joy detonated in Amelia. Then, one second later, something colder and heavier came down on top of it because of Hannah.

“But Hannah is still out there somewhere…” The worry was plain on her face.

With Hannah unaccounted for somewhere in Premond, intention unknown, was it actually safe to leave the hotel and drive out to a stranger’s estate?

Mason seemed to read exactly what she was thinking. He leaned forward, both hands braced on the desk on either side of her, bringing her into the small space between him and the edge of the desk.

He looked down at her. “I know what you’re worried about. But we can’t let a rat in the gutter derail everything. Mr. Whitfield doesn’t extend invitations often. If we miss this one, there’s no telling when another chance will come around.”

He reached up and touched her cheek, just briefly, his fingers warm against her skin.

“Trust me. I’ve already taken care of it. Go get changed. I’ll be with you the whole time.”

The unease was still there. But her desire to find the Porteria businessman’s wife’s surviving work, and her trust in Mason, outweighed it. She looked at him, close enough to see everything in his expression, and nodded.

By the time they left, the city had come fully alive with light. Mason drove, Amelia in the passenger seat, the two of them in a low-profile black Bentley that drew no particular attention. She’d understood the logic of that without being told.

She knew he’d said it was safe. She believed him. And still, as the hotel fell behind them, she found herself watching the street through the window with a vigilance she couldn’t switch off. The city looked different tonight, all that brightness carrying an edge she couldn’t quite shake.,

The car was quiet. Mason drove with the focused ease he brought to everything. She noticed him check the rearview mirror at regular intervals, not anxiously, but consistently

They moved through a few busy blocks and then turned onto a quieter road leading toward the outskirts of the city. The streetlights thinned. On either side, the city gave way to stretches of dark woodland.

A black sedan was behind them. Not close, going the same direction.

But Mason took two more turns, and the

Her hand closed around the seatbelt without her noticing.

She didn’t look in the mirror again. She sat very still, every bit of her attention pulled toward the darkness behind the car.

Hannah’s people? Or something else entirely?

Dark possibilities multiplied in her mind, fast and unbidden.

She turned her head slowly and looked at Mason. He was watching the road, hands steady on the wheel, face giving nothing away. He looked like a man with no idea he was being followed.

She wet her lips. “Mason. That car behind us. Has it been there the whole time?”

He glanced in the rearview mirror, a single unhurried look at the darkness behind them, then turned to her. She was rigid in her seat, and he could see it.

“Don’t worry. That’s one of my cars. Must have just caught up with us. Outer perimeter security.”

So it was one of theirs. The breath Amelia had been holding came loose all at once, her heart dropping back into place with a thud.

Her grip on the seatbelt loosened, and she noticed for the first time that her palm was damp.

“Oh,” she said. Her voice still wasn’t entirely steady.

Mason watched her, and something quietly pained moved through his expression. He freed one hand from the wheel and laid it over hers, letting the warmth of it do what words couldn’t, and said, with a gentleness that had a thread of teasing in it, “She hasn’t even done anything yet and we’ve already scared ourselves half to death.”

Amelia looked down, embarrassed by how thoroughly she’d unraveled.

Though she didn’t think it was entirely her fault. Hannah’s name had become something lodged in her, invisible and sharp, making her flinch at things that didn’t warrant it.
