Chapter 639 The Collection
Amelia took a few slow, deliberate breaths and let the tension work its way out. A quiet sound of acknowledgment was all she managed, but it was enough.

With Mason’s explanation, the car behind them had changed from a threat into something steady watching over them, and she could feel the difference in her body. The tightness across her shoulders gradually released.
The road curved, the car slowed, and then, at the far end of a stretch of dark woodland, a fully lit classical estate appeared without warning.
Tall ornate iron gates drew open on both sides. The car rolled forward along a wide gravel drive, formal gardens running along either side, clipped and precise.
At the end of it stood the main house, a 17th-century chateau in pale stone that glowed warm and golden under the lights, the kind of place that looked like it had stepped out of a storybook.
They stopped beside a fountain at the front entrance.
Before they were even out of the car, the heavy oak doors swung open from inside.
A man in a well-cut suit stood on the front steps with a woman in an elegant gown, both of them smiling. in welcome.
The man was perhaps ten years older than Mason, somewhere in his early 40s, with deep-set eyes and a strong nose. Age had given him something more than lines. There was an ease to him, the particular composure of someone who had long since stopped needing to prove anything.
This was Dubois Whitfield, the collector friend Mason had mentioned. Beside him stood Sophie Whitfield, a woman of quiet, cultivated grace, her features delicate and composed, every movement carrying the kind of gentle elegance that spoke of a life well looked after.
Dubois came down the steps first and pulled Mason into a warm embrace. “Mason, my friend. Welcome.” Mason smiled and returned it, then turned to introduce Amelia. “This is Amelia Harlow, my girlfriend.”
He glanced at her. “Mr. and Mrs. Whitfield.”
Amelia smiled and said hello. Sophie stepped forward and spoke to her in soft Eldorian. “Ms. Harlow, so lovely to meet you.” The warmth in it closed the distance between them almost immediately.
After a few minutes on the steps, Dubois led them
Mason didn’t take long to get to the point. After a brief exchange of pleasantries, he said simply, ‘I’ll be upfront with you. We came tonight for dinner, but we also have a favor to ask.”
He glanced at Amelia. “Amelia is a fashion designer. She’s long admired your collection. We were hoping. if it’s not too much trouble, that she might
able to have a look at it.”
Dubois’s face opened into a genuine smile. He looked at Amelia with something appreciative in his expression. “Of course. It would be an honor to have a designer’s eye on them.“

He turned to his wife. “Sophie, darling, would you mind taking Ms. Harlow to see the collection while Mason and I catch up?”
Sophie agreed with a smile and gestured toward the stairs. “Right this way, Ms. Harlow.”
The collection room was on the second floor. It was enormous, close to 5,000 square feet, less a private room than a small museum. When the heavy carved door swung open, Amelia forgot to breathe for a
moment.
The air inside was climate-controlled, cool and steady, carrying a faint trace of old fabric and preserved time.
Under soft, carefully positioned spotlights, rows of dressed mannequins stood in absolute stillness, a silent procession that seemed to span generations.
The collection moved from the early 20th century through to the present, each piece a landmark of its era, each one carrying the particular weight of a designer’s complete attention. Each piece was more than a garment. It was a work of art carrying the maker’s soul and the mark of its time.
