Chapter 641 The Character on the Lining

The words detonated somewhere inside Amelia

The young wife of the Porteria businessman. The designer of extraordinary talent who had devoted herself to the Cindaran gown. Every thread of evidence she had gathered was now pulling violently toward a single point.

Amelia stood there looking at the gown and couldn’t find her voice.

After a long moment, she heard herself say, almost involuntarily, “You could still have another top designer alter the fit. There are ways.”

It wasn’t really advice. It was closer to something she needed to say out loud while the shock of what she was thinking moved through her.

“No.” Sophie smiled and shook her head. She reached toward the glass case and traced the outline of the gown with her fingertips, not quite touching it, her expression full of careful devotion. “It was there for the happiest moment of my life. That’s enough. I couldn’t give something like this to anyone else to alter. Even the smallest change would feel like a betrayal of what it is and the story behind it.”

Amelia understood completely. There was nothing to argue with in that.

It wasn’t just a garment. It was a container for something that couldn’t be replaced, and Sophie knew exactly what she had.

Amelia’s eyes stung without warning, a thin mist spreading fast. Her gaze flickered, bright and unsteady, as she looked at Sophie. “Could I… get a little closer? To look properly?”

“Of course,” Sophie said without hesitation.

With permission granted, Amelia reached into her bag and drew out a pair of black velvet gloves she always carried for examining fabric. Years of habit. She pulled them on and crossed to the display platform, standing before the gown.

Up close, the silk revealed itself fully. The weave was dense and intricate, catching the light in shifting. layers, and the gold thread fern embroidery was extraordinary, each individual leaf rendered with its own. fine veining, the stitchwork close, tender, and unhurried.

There was a quality to it that felt distinctly feminine, precise without being rigid, delicate without being fragile.

Then a faint current of air moved through the room, some minor shift in the climate system, and the pale hem lifted just slightly, opening at the corner.

A sliver of lining showed. And on that lining, stitched in white thread the same shade as the silk, in small and careful characters, was a single letter, A.

The room went white at the edges of Amelia’s vision.

Time stretched and slowed in a way she had no control over.

She was trying to find the words to ask Sophie about it when a ringtone cut through the stillness of the collection room, bright and abrupt.

Sophie gave Amelia an apologetic smile and answered.

“Darling?”

Whatever was said on the other end moved across her face in quick succession, surprise first, then comprehension. She glanced at the moon-white gown on its platform, then at Amelia, and responded in low Farolian.

“Alright. Yes. We’ll come down now.”

She ended the call and turned to Amelia with an expression caught between exasperation and amusement. “That was my husband. Someone just contacted him, apparently quite insistently, saying they want to buy this gown. Called him directly.”

Buy it?

“He said the person may come in person very shortly.” Sophie continued. “To avoid any awkwardness, he’d like us to come back down. Dinner is ready.”

The questions crowding Amelia’s throat nearly came out. She pulled them back.
