Mason didn’t like the way Lenny looked at Amelia.

Dubois, unaware of any of it, gestured pleasantly toward the stairs. “Mr. Jewell, since you’re so interested in the gown, shall we go up to the collection room now so you can see it for yourself?”

A perfectly natural suggestion.

“Mr. Whitfield.” Mason stood smoothly. “It’s getting late. We don’t want to overstay. We’ll come back another time.”

As he said it, he placed his hand on Amelia’s arm and guided her to her feet.

Dubois looked mildly surprised, but read the room well enough and nodded. “Of course. Let me see you

out.”

Amelia said nothing. She let Mason steer her through the goodbyes without a word.

Lenny stayed where he was. He stood very still as they moved toward the door, his gaze trailing after Amelia, settling on the line of her back. His throat moved once, almost imperceptibly.

It wasn’t until they were nearly at the door that he seemed to come back to himself. He gave a brief, belated nod in their direction. “Goodnight.”

On the drive back, Amelia’s face was quiet and heavy in the shifting light outside the window.

The man named Lenny. The gown with her initial stitched into the lining.

What was the connection between them? And why had the sight of her affected him like that?

“What are you thinking about?”

Mason’s voice came low from beside her, breaking the silence. He’d been watching her since they got in the car and hadn’t missed a thing.

Amelia turned to him, She bit her lower lip. “I don’t know why, but I really don’t want that gown to go to someone else.”

Mason looked at her for a moment, and a quiet smile crossed his face.

“That’s an easy fix.”

Before she could ask what he meant, he had his phone out and was dialing. She watched him.

Dubois answered quickly.

“Dubois, sorry to call so late.” Mason switched to easy Farolian. “I just wanted to check. The moon–white gown, is it still available?”

There was a warm laugh on the other end. Dubois sounded like a man who had been expecting exactly

this call.

Beautiful things mean more when they’re seen by someone who actually gets them.”

Mason ended the call and turned to her. She was looking at him with barely concealed anxiety.

“It’s still there. He said no to Lenny.”
