Chapter 693 Is That So
Mason raised an eyebrow and let the words stretch out with deliberate ease. “Feeling that generous, are you?”
Amelia read him instantly.
She turned to face the other diners with a bright, open smile and raised her voice just enough to carry. “Did everyone catch that? Tonight’s tab is on this gentleman right here. Order whatever you’d like, everyone. He’s treating!”
The restaurant went dead quiet for exactly one second.
Surprised reactions spread across the restaurant in a wave of delighted, thoroughly entertained faces.
The clientele of a place like this was wealthy almost without exception, but a free meal was a free méd and nobody turned that down.
“Seriously?”
“What a guy!”
“That’s what I call generous!”
“Thank you so much!”
The applause and compliments came from every direction at once.
Pedro had intended to put Mason and Amelia in an embarrassing position in front of a full dining room. He had not anticipated being neatly turned around and backed into a corner from which there was no graceful exit.
Picking up the entire restaurant’s bill wasn’t going to bankrupt him, but it was far from nothing, and being forced into paying for it made his blood boil.
“Mason!” His face had gone tight and ugly with fury. “Keep it up and I’ll call home right now and have your accounts frozen. Every last one. You won’t have a cent to your name.”
Mason looked at him with mild curiosity and a quiet laugh. “You think Grandma hasn’t tried? Call home and ask her yourself. Ask her why it didn’t work.”
Pedro had been convinced that stealing Mason’s table and humiliating him publicly in front of a room full of people would crack him open, prove once and for all that Pedro was the one with real authority over the Everett Group now.
He had been waiting for Mason to lose his composure.
Instead, he had lost his own.
Mason had not shifted a single degree throughout the entire exchange. His expression hadn’t tensed once. He patted Amelia’s hand where it rested in the crook of his arm and said, “Do you still want to eat here?

Amelia shook her head. “I’d rather not. There’s an unpleasant presence in the room?
Mason gave a small not of complete agreement.
He didn’t look at Pedro again. He seuled his hand lightly at the small of Amelia’s back and walked her of the restaurant with the unhurried ease of two people who had somewhere better to be.
Pedro watched their retreating figures until they disappeared from view, and the feeling of being dismissed like he didn’t exist lit something furious and wordless inside him.
“Putting on a show,” he muttered under his breath.
Beatrice, standing beside him, felt the evening’s momentum deflate.
She had expected to watch Mason and Amelia leave in defeat. Instead she’d watched them walk out on points.
She tugged gently at Pedro’s sleeve. “Let it go. They’re not worth it.”
Pedro pulled his temper back in.
He reminded himself why he’d actually brought Beatrice here tonight.
Making a scene outside accomplished nothing. The real purpose of the evening still needed to happen.
He smoothed his expression, took Beatrice’s hand, and guided her back to their table with a lightness he didn’t fully feel.
The dishes arrived in short order.
When the moment felt right, Pedro snapped his fingers once, casual and practiced.
A server appeared almost immediately, carrying a long, elegant flower box. Inside it lay dozens of deep red roses, each one full and lush and fragrant, the kind that looked like they’d been selected one by one
Beatrice’s eyes went wide and luminous.
