Chapter 694 His Scheme

Pedro gave a slow, deliberate nod. “The truth is… Mason wasn’t wrong just now.

“I have been running into some real problems lately.”

Something shifted in Beatrice’s chest. She knew Pedro was working up to asking her for something, but she kept her expression composed and let her voice go softer. “What’s going on? If there’s anything I can do, just tell me.”

Pedro shook his head with a weary smile. “You might not know the full picture. The Everett Group is in a rough stretch.

“Most of the company’s partnership network was built around Mason’s personal connections. Now that he’s been removed, those partners are getting restless. Some of them have already started lining up to dissolve their contracts.

“I need to rebuild the company’s partner base from the ground up and bring in new collaborators. But that requires a significant amount of liquid capital to work with and to make the right moves.”

He delivered it all with the burdened sincerity of someone barely keeping his head above water. “I’m the acting president, but I don’t have full control yet. A lot of the company’s funds are still out of my reach for now. So I was thinking… if you could talk to your family and get Harlow Group to partner with me, that would solve the cash flow problem right there.”

Beatrice had enough business experience to know exactly what she was looking at.

Harlow Group didn’t operate at the Everett Group’s level, but she understood how these things worked. What Pedro was describing, stripped of the diplomatic language, was using the Harlow family’s resources to bail him out of trouble.

The warmth in her expression cooled slightly.

“The thing is,” she said, hesitating, “you know the situation at Harlow Group. We’ve been limping along for years. There isn’t much capital to offer. Even as a partnership with the Group, it might not move the needle enough to matter.”

Pedro didn’t show a flicker of discouragement.

He leaned in, dropping his voice into something more persuasive. “No capital means you leverage what you have. A standard bank loan wouldn’t work for Harlow Group, I know that. But with the right approach and the right connections, using the Harlow name as a basis, you could bring in significant short-term funding. And in the process, Harlow Group gets to revive itself completely, attach itself to the Everett Group’s trajectory, and come out of this as one of Eldoria’s premier names.”

Beatrice felt her pulse pick up despite herself.

She understood exactly what he was describing. It was the kind of operation that pushed legal boundaries, carrying real risk. But the upside, if it worked, was substantial.

“Still,” she said, the hesitation in her voice real, “Pedro, the risk feels significant. Harlow Group doesn’t have a deep enough foundation. If something goes sideways, we won’t have the resources to absorb it. Is there really no other way?”

Pedro let out a rueful laugh. “Beatrice, do you think I haven’t gone through every other option? I’ve considered every option. The Everett Group is under pressure from all sides right now. The board is watching every move I make, waiting for me to slip. And Mason is standing there waiting for me to fail.

“Who do you think I can actually trust right now? Besides my grandmother, who else is in my corner?”

He was leaning on the emotional current between them now, and he kept at it.

“For years, Mason and his brother absorbed all the real wealth and influence in this family. I’ve always been kept at arm’s length, working with what I was given. My grandmother wants to help me, but the board is watching her too. They’re using this moment to gauge whether I have what it takes. If I can’t get past this before the executive election next month, I lose whatever ground I’ve managed to build.

“Beatrice.” Pedro took both of her hands in his and looked at her with an intensity that was difficult to look away from. “I’m telling you all of this because I trust you completely. You’re the only person I’ve let inside this. I’ve never talked about Everett Group business with anyone outside the family. But if we get through this together, once I’m actually running this company the way I’m supposed to be, my grandmother will fully support us getting married. I know she will.”

That last part landed exactly where Pedro had intended it to.

The Everett matriarch was known for her pride and her standards.

She cared deeply about family standing and reputation, and a family like the Harlows, without the legacy to back it up, would never naturally clear her bar.

Beatrice knew that silence on the subject now didn’t mean acceptance later. When it actually came time for her and Pedro to marry, the old woman would not simply give her blessing without a reason to.

But if Beatrice helped Pedro survive this moment and proved herself a capable partner when it mattered most, that was a different story entirely.

That would be the foundation of something, the proof of her value that could actually earn her a permanent place in the Everett family.
