Chapter 706 Within the Flames

Black smoke poured steadily through the gap beneath the locked dour. It was the only thing left in Amelia’s field of vision.

Hannah stumbled down the staircase, her face flushed and burning, unable to disguise the unhinged excitement blazing in her eyes.

She reached the second-floor landing and nearly collided with Faye, who had been waiting there

The sedative finished its work. Hannah’s terrified eyes fell closed, and she went limp.

Faye straightened and swept a cold, dispassionate look toward the attic door.

She didn’t hesitate. She did exactly what Hannah had done, touching flame to a section of carpet she had already soaked with accelerant.

The flames spread across the floor instantly.

Faye watched the spreading inferno with something in her eyes that looked unmistakably like relief.

Then she drew a slow breath, smoothed the few strands of hair that had come loose, rearranged her face into an expression of wild terror, and ran for the front of the house, her screams tearing through the silence of the building.

“Fire! Someone help! Fire!”

Up in the attic, Amelia came back to herself on a wave of smoke so thick it felt like it was trying to pull her lungs inside out.

Her consciousness came back in pieces, heavy and incomplete, but the part of her that wanted to survive was already trying to move before the rest of her had caught up.

She looked around. Everything Demi had left behi

was gone, already swallowed by the fire.

She started searching by touch, her palms pressed to the floor as she moved. The heated surface raised blisters on her skin that she didn’t register at all.

Her hands found a broken piece of solid wood. She tried to beat back the nearest flames with it, tried to put enough force behind a swing to break through the locked door.

But every

time she moved, every swing she took, she pulled more carbon monoxide into her lungs

The attic was completely consumed by thick, black smoke. She couldn’t see anything through the darkness. She navigated entirely by memory, moving through the heat and the darkness toward where she remembered the desk sitting near the door.

Her plan was to use the desk to pull herself upright, then use the heavy metal lamp on it to break through the door.

She got her fingers around the desk’s edge. Then the dizziness and nausea came for her all at once, so violent and so total that her grip failed immediately.

The damage to her head, catastrophic on its own, was becoming something unsurvivable in an oxygen- depleted space.

Her vision went completely black. Her fingers slid across the smooth desk surface, producing one lase. quiet sound of resistance.

Amelia sank against the corner of the desk and went down, inch by inch.

In the last second before consciousness left her entirely, she heard something. A crashing impact, powerful and purposeful, coming front somewhere close.

Then a tall shape seemed to move toward her through the dark.

Her awareness floated at the edge of oblivion, pulled back and forth between the blackness and the heat. between sound and silence.

She felt like she was being dragged down into something bottomless, surrounded by suffocating smoke. with the roar of the fire consuming everything around her. She was nearly gone. And then, at the very last edge of perception, a color appeared in the darkness ahead of her. It was cool and pale as winter moonlight.
