Chapter 707 It Was Him

The face that appeared to her was slender-and gentle, with features that mirrored her own by seven or eight parts in ten.

She wore a flowing pale gown that caught the light softly, her whole presence carrying a quality that was beautiful and untethered at once, as though she existed at the very edge of somewhere else.

The woman reached out and let her fingertips trace Amelia’s cheek, the touch slow and feather-light and full of a longing that had nowhere left to go.

A wave of profound, wordless tenderness swept over Amelia in that instan

She reached out to answer it.

But when her fingers stretched toward the woman, they passed through her entirely, finding nothing but cold, empty air. The woman simply stood in the space between the firelight and the smoke, perfectly still. no sound at all, her eyes resting on Amelia with a depth of love that didn’t need words.

Amélia understood, in the instinctive way people sometimes understand impossible things.

Then the woman’s face began to soften at the edges, dissolving the way ink dissolves in water, until the pale gown and the gentle eyes became scattered points of light and disappeared into the smoke.

“Don’t go,” Amelia said, her body twitching hard. “Please don’t go!” The desperation of it pulled her consciousness back.

She forced her eyes open. White ceiling. The sharp, clean smell of disinfectant. The quiet, particular hum of a medical floor.

The attic was gone. She was in a hospital room.

Her heart was pounding, and her lungs burned with every breath, and both of those things told her she was alive.

She turned her head.

Mason was there. His face was drawn and rough with unshaved stubble, his eyes shot through with red

He looked like someone who had been startled awake from an uneasy sleep, hair falling across his forehead in loose, disordered strands.

The tightness along his jaw and the deep worry carved into his expression told the whole story of how the

Something warm and aching moved through Amelia’s chest.

She tried to lift her hand toward him.

Her wrist flared with pain. She looked down. Both her hands were wrapped in thick white bandaging from wrist to knuckles, evidence of burns she didn’t remember sustaining

Chapter 707 Was Him

Fragments of memory pushed their way back, incomplete and disjointed.

She should have died in that attic. How was she here?

Mason felt her stir and looked up. The moment he saw her eyes open, relief immediately returned to hi eyes:

“Amelia.” He wrapped both hands around her bandaged ones, his voice shaking with relief he wasn’t tryin to contain. “Thank God. You’re finally awake.”

“Mason.” Her throat was raw and dry. The words came out with difficulty. She needed answers for that one question in her mind. “I’m not dead? Did you pull me out?”

The brightness in Mason’s face went still.

Something conflicting moved through his eyes.

He shook his head, and the guilt in his expression was unmistakable.

“It wasn’t me. The person who got you out was Ethan.”

Amelia stared. “How?” It was unbelievable.

“Ethan knew you were visiting Demi’s house today,” Mason said. “He’s been overseas these past several weeks, digging into Demi’s history. He found something, a secret involving Faye. He called you to warn you that Faye was actually the more dangerous one to watch, not Hannah.

“The call connected. And then he heard everything. He heard you and Hannah in the attic.”

Mason’s voice went heavier, and the residual fear underneath it was audible. “He heard what Hannah was planning to do to you. He called me immediately and told me you were in danger, then drove to Dermis house himself without stopping for anything.”

He paused, and when he spoke again his voice had dropped.

“Amelia, I’m sorry. I was one step too late. By the time I arrived the whole building was burning. Ethan had already carried you out.

“He was covered in injuries, his face black with smoke, and he was barely standing when he came through that door, but he didn’t put you down. Not until he’d handed you to me.”

The room was quiet for a moment.

Amelia lay still and let that settle.
