**Chapter 79: Wrong Table, Wrong Time**
Lily’s eyes locked onto Mason from across the room, a jolt of recognition sparking in her chest.
In a swift motion, she turned her head sharply, her voice laced with incredulity. “How do you even know Mason?”
The man across from her shrugged as if the answer was trivial. “Oh, him? We were close friends back when I was studying abroad. He’s quite the catch—handsome and wealthy. What’s the matter? Jealous, are we?”
As he spoke, Mason was already making his way toward their table, his presence commanding attention.
His gaze didn’t linger on the man who had just spoken; instead, it landed directly on Amelia. She was hunched over, her head bowed so low that it seemed she wished to disappear into her plate.
Noticing her discomfort, Mason’s brow furrowed slightly, a flicker of concern crossing his face before he turned his icy gaze toward the source of the disturbance. “What are you doing sitting here?” he demanded, his voice steady but laced with an undercurrent of annoyance.
Tim, oblivious to the tension in the air, perked up at Mason’s arrival. He pointed at Lily with exaggerated flair, as if he were on stage. “Why? I’m here to seek justice! Mason, listen to this—this woman kicked me at the river that night! Out of nowhere! She nearly ruined my chances of becoming a father! And then, as if that wasn’t enough, she tried to bribe me with five hundred bucks to make it all go away!”
Mason remained silent, choosing instead to take a seat beside Amelia, the empty space at the four-person table suddenly feeling constricting with his presence.
He picked up the glass of lemon water the server had just poured for him, his demeanor calm as he asked, “And then?”
Tim, still caught up in his own excitement, continued without a hint of awareness regarding Mason’s cold demeanor. “And then? She offered to pay for dinner! So why bother finding another table? We can all sit together! Don’t worry; they won’t mind.” He even winked at Mason, a misguided attempt at camaraderie. “Because the two of them are a couple.”
Time seemed to freeze for both Lily and Amelia.
Mason’s expression turned to ice, his eyes narrowing as he processed Tim’s words.
His long fingers tightened around the glass, the delicate crystal creaking under his grip.
He took a deliberate sip, letting the tension hang in the air before lifting his gaze once more, his voice cold and cutting. “A couple?”
Lily felt a wave of panic wash over her, sweat trickling down her back as her mind raced.
Her thoughts, usually sharp and quick, were now a chaotic mess. She waved her hands frantically, desperate to clarify. “Mr. Everett, please don’t misunderstand! I was merely questioning Mr. Clem’s character; that’s why I said that! Actually, Amelia… she’s very, very straight!”
The chaos surrounding them had little to do with Amelia, yet she found herself at the center of the storm, caught in the crossfire of accusations and misunderstandings.
Suddenly, she felt a sharp discomfort as she choked on her food, her eyes widening in alarm.
The steak she had ordered, which had initially seemed to have just a hint of spice, now felt like a raging inferno in her throat. Panic surged through her as the heat intensified, burning her insides.
