Not just the Beta (Oriana and Slade) novel Chapter 54

Alpha Austin

He was back in Maine, in Greenville itself, because for the dozenth time over the past four years, someone had accessed the Wolfen intranet from this little town. Not once had he or any of his tech department been in their office, or at that lab computer when it happened, and been able to track it right back to the actual address until just recently.

There was no pattern to the access, no specific time or day of the week that it always happened at. Only that it was usually after the standard knock off time, when his tech’s had all gone home for the day. And because it wasn’t a regular thing, only once every few months, and unpredictable, he’d not seen, nor had Julious, the point of putting on a night shift to watch for it.

If it had been a threat to the pack, then yes, he would have, but this wolf wasn’t a threat of any kind, just out there trying to survive on its own was the conclusion. There was nothing searched on the pack itself, not the hierarchy or training, not the money that came and went. Nothing about his companies and they never stole anything.

Julious was of the opinion that they could, if they wanted to, likely access and steal pack funds or re-delegate shares themselves. But that didn’t happen, they were all about Wolfen rules and laws, in the beginning, finding out what was severely punishable and what would attract unwanted Wolfen Council attention to them.

Could a rogue hold a business in the human world, without severe punishment from the council itself? Which they could if they were small and of no harm to any other wolves. If the rogue itself was just out there alone and making a living as a human, which many often did now, as he and the council had seen over the years: some could amass great wealth, but they harmed none, so they were left alone.

It was now considered a minor infraction of Wolfen laws, and if caught nowadays, it was simply a slap on the wrist, so to speak. They had to just register their business with the council, if they did not want to be initiated back into a pack. Were simply affiliated with the council itself, but could stay a rogue, get a wolfen council logo on their business website if they wanted to, but not anywhere in the actual business itself. They were made to give 10% of their funds to the Wolfen Council as per Wolfen Law.

Then that wolf’s searching; it had become about sourcing things for a tech lab and wolfen chemicals, though they couldn’t track where that wolf bought anything, they found the information. and then shut down access, and went direct to the source he supposed, to get what it was they needed for them to make their living.

The things that were now accessed and searched out over the past 10 months, he thought, related to female rogues or a she-wolf trying to hide herself from someone or a pack even. Likely close to being caught by someone.

It was curious to him now, over the past few years, prior to this last 10 months, it had not had anything to do with trying to hide themselves. It had now shifted from laws and gear hunting, to protection, was solely focused now on hiding themselves. Then what he and his unit had originally thought, was a wolf building a career for themselves out in the human world. This had changed.

Now they were all about finding ways to create a bond and mind-linking to another even as a rogue. Then blood bonding, he could only think that this wolf had likely come across a she-wolf that was in need of their help, or was trying to create some sort of family bond with another; to help with not losing themselves to the wilds of being a rogue.

Turning savage, losing themselves completely, which could happen if one didn’t find a way to connect with others and socialise themselves. Wolves did not do well on their own, though females tended to do better on their own than males, that was still a full curiosity to the wolfen world. Why did the women do better on their own? It had been put down to their survival instincts and the constant threat of danger to them.

Then, it had been upgraded to register not only the name of the company, but the actual computer within his companies, in the human world, and inside his pack to pinpoint the pack members so he could speak with them. See what the issue was and try to resolve it.

Now it had been upgraded once more to register and specifically flag non-company access, which was how he was alerted to this person using his name and pack to access the intranet. The closest they could get to this wolf, was the town of Greenville, Maine. The head of his tech department, Julious, had tried to track it on many occasions. They even created a programme that would track it at the time of access, but that programme was always halted and shut down, due to what Julious believed was the other person closing themselves out of the intranet before getting what he needed.

His tech department had been shocked that it had been shut down that first time, during their first attempt at real-time tracking. It had been interesting to them, they’d come to the conclusion that whoever it was, was also a wolfen tech, and actively tracked them as well. Or that they had a programme running in the background because they suspected they were being tracked themselves.

That was why they never got them, only ever got as far as Greenville, Maine. That wolf likely allowed them to be seen, or it took them that long to stop Julious’ programme from tracking them and shutting it down.

It frustrated Julious to no end. He’d thought he was one of the best but was being defeated by another. Though he also admitted it was a good challenge for his computing skills, and he liked that part of it. He was just unhappy someone was hacking into the pack’s security even if they never did anything detrimental to the pack itself.

He was always working on upgrading that programme of his, to try and catch this wolf quicker, but it seemed they too, were always on the ball. Pre-empting all his thoughts on it and guessing what he was going to do, and finding ways to block him.
