Chapter 106
When Ophelia arrived at school, third period had just ended.
She walked straight into the classroom and sat down at her desk.
“Late on your very first day? Ophelia, do you really think just because you’ve got connections you can do as you please?” Daphne’s shrill voice rang out, and just seeing Ophelia made her seethe with hatred.
Ophelia shot Daphne a cold, disdainful look. “What’s it to you?”
Why is she everywhere? So freaking annoying,’ Ophelia thought.
Daphne choked on her anger, her eyes wide as she shouted, “Ophelia, can’t you be a little more self-aware? Don’t pretend you don’t know how you got into Dunhollow University! And now you’re acting like this? Are you trying to hold the whole class back?”
Ophelia blinked, thinking, ‘She’s really standing on that moral high ground, huh? Doesn’t she worry the wind might blow her right off?”
“Why do you care? In the end, we’re all on our own paths anyway, and it all comes down to our own abilities. I’m not about to take the blame for holding everyone back,” Ophelia said, her gaze sweeping over the rest of the class.
The students, who had been looking a bit down, suddenly looked conflicted.
Maybe they realized Ophelia had a point, because someone quietly picked up their book.
Daphne was momentarily stunned, caught off guard by Ophelia’s words, and couldn’t think of a comeback.
“Mr. Wells is coming!” someone shouted, cutting through the argument.
Everyone scrambled to their seats just as Mr. Wells stepped into the classroom.
“Before we start class, I’ve got something to say,” Mr. Wells said, scanning the room before his gaze lingered on Ophelia for a moment. “You all know we’re about to enter competition season.”
“Heck yeah, it’s finally our time to shine!” someone called out, practically bouncing in their seat.
“Quiet,” Mr. Wells said, holding up a stack of papers. “These are the application forms for the math competition. If you’re interested, fill one out.”
“Jaxon, come grab these and hand them out to the class,” he added.
“Got it,” Jaxon replied.
Jaxon came over, grabbed the forms, and started passing them around to anyone who looked interested.
Mr. Wells kept his gaze fixed on Ophelia. Seeing she wasn’t reacting, he rubbed his temples and finally called out, “Ophelia.”
Ophelia looked up, her eyes questioning.
*Fill this out and make sure you turn it in,” Mr. Wells said. As soon as he finished, Jaxon quickly fetched a form and handed
it to her.
“Competition application form?” Ophelia frowned, looking puzzled. “Mr. Wells, I didn’t sign up for any competition, did I?”
She could tell this form wasn’t like the others.
“This is a national event, and our team is led by Professor Hayes. He said you have to join,” Mr. Wells explained.
So yeah, her form really was different. Everyone else had to fight for a spot in the prelims, but Ophelia was already in.
“Why?” Daphne burst out before Ophelia could even respond. “Why does she get to skip the prelims and go straight to the competition?”
“Daphne!” Mr. Wells’s face darkened, and he shot her a warning look. “That’s not your business. Just worry about yourself.”
“No way, we’re not okay with this!” Daphne was practically shaking with anger. ‘Why does Ophelia always get all the perks? she fumed.
“Mr. Wells, we get that it’s the school’s call, but can you at least tell us why?” one of the students piped up, sounding a little uneasy and clearly thinking it was unfair.
Mr. Wells glanced at Ophelia, looking uncomfortable. Honestly, he didn’t have a good explanation, he was just following orders.
Ophelia could tell right away, this was probably
