Chapter 107
“Yeah.” Ophelia nodded, then glanced at Jaxon. “Hand me an application form, will you?”
She handed the other form back to Mr. Wells.
Mr. Wells shot her an approving look. “Alright, let’s see you crush it, Ophelia.”
He couldn’t explain why, but Ophelia just seemed so sure of herself.
Daphne snorted, her voice full of disdain. “So what if you’re joining the prelims? Don’t get your hopes up, you’re just going to get eliminated.”
“You’re making all that noise, but I don’t see you signing up,” Ophelia shot back, eyebrow raised, her tone openly challenging.
Daphne tossed her chin up, looking smug. “Of course I’m signing up. I’ll show you what I’m made of.”
“Looking forward to it,” Ophelia said with a shrug, her voice laced with amusement.
‘Some people just need to get put in their place before they learn to shut up,’ Ophelia thought.
“Me too,” Daphne said, her face full of smug satisfaction, as if she’d already put Ophelia in her place and was basking in her victory.
“If there are no more questions, let’s get started,” Mr. Wells said, and the classroom fell silent.
Ophelia stared at the application form in her hand, rubbing her temples. ‘Guess I’ll have to talk to Connor about this. Competitions at this level? I’m usually the one judging, not competing.
‘He probably just wants me to bring some glory to the school, but honestly, I’m really not into these low-level contests at all; she sighed inwardly.
Just as she was lost in thought, Ophelia suddenly felt someone staring at her. She looked up.
Her eyes met Zoe’s, but Zoe quickly looked away, looking a little flustered.
Ophelia raised an eyebrow. ‘Well, well, she is awfully quiet today. Must’ve been spooked by what happened this morning. Guess she really can’t get away with sneaky stuff, she thought.
Zoe was feeling all kinds of conflicted. She had no idea what happened at the police station with Ophelia, and she was even more shocked that Ophelia was actually signing up for the math competition. ‘Is she really that good at math?’ Zoe wondered.
‘If she’s not some kind of genius, then why did the school single her out for this?’ she thought, still puzzled.
Ophelia didn’t even notice what Zoe was thinking.
She was just debating with herself, if she entered the competition, should she go all out and show her true skills, or should she keep a low profile and not draw too much attention?
Before she knew it, school was over.
Ophelia drove herself home and arrived a little before Zoe did.
When Zoe got home, she found Ophelia and Victoria having a lively chat in the living room.
