Chapter 108
Back then, the trail of the poisoner had only led as far as Chloe’s distant nephew. After Ophelia figured out the poison, she’ d quietly slipped a little something into Chloe’s water.
Now that Chloe was fine, it meant one thing, either Chloe knew her way around poisons, or she had an antidote.
A cool, almost mocking smirk curled at Ophelia’s lips. ‘Well, that’s an unexpected twist, she thought.
Having Ella keep tabs on Chloe had definitely been the right move. ‘Give it a little more time, Ophelia mused, ‘and we’ll catch her slip up.’
Anyone who’d done something would always leave a trace. It was only a matter of time before they slipped up.
Ophelia stole a glance at Victoria. Deep down, she knew that when it came to Zoe, she needed irrefutable evidence.
“Mom, I’m heading back to my room,” Ophelia said as she stood up.
Zoe called after her with genuine concern, “Ophelia, let me help you find some study materials, so you’ll have a better shot.”
“Ophelia needs study materials?” Victoria blurted out. “Just tell me what you need, and I’ll go buy them for you.”
“Mom, Ophelia signed up for the math competition today,” Zoe added, her eyes twinkling with a smile, looking genuinely happy for Ophelia.
Victoria’s face lit up. “You’re going to compete in the math contest? That’s great news!”
Zoe bit her lip, hesitating before she added, “But Ophelia’s never done a national competition before, right? I was thinking I could help her study a bit, so maybe she can pass the prelims and qualify for the main event.”
“Well… if Ophelia signed up, she must be pretty confident,” Victoria said, sounding a little unsure.
As she spoke, Victoria glanced at Ophelia, already thinking that if Ophelia really needed study materials, she’d make sure to buy them for her.
Ophelia shook her head, her lips curling into a small smile. “Mom, no need for study materials. It’s just a math contest, I’ll be fine.”
“I always knew you were incredible, Ophelia,” Victoria said, beaming with admiration.
Zoe forced a smile, though her jaw was tight with annoyance. “Ophelia, even if you were a big deal at your old school, this is Dunhollow University. You can’t just slack off here.”
“I know,” Ophelia replied coolly, shooting Zoe a frosty look. “I saw you signed up too. Maybe you should worry about yourself instead.”
Ophelia had zero interest in faking sisterly affection with Zoe. The very thought made her feel sick.
Chloe couldn’t help but show off, her tone smug. “Miss Ophelia, you might not realize, but Miss Zoe enters the competition every year, and she’s racked up quite a few awards.”
As soon as Chloe finished, Zoe smirked and lifted her chin even higher. ‘So what if Ophelia’s the golden child?’ she thought. ‘I’ll always outshine her when it comes to grades.’
Ophelia flashed a dismissive smile, her voice dripping with indifference. “Well, good luck with that. Hope you can pull it off again.”
With that, Ophelia turned to Victoria, her expression softening. “Mom, I’ve got something to take care of tonight. I’m going. to change and head out.”
“Will you be back for dinner?” Victoria asked, almost without thinking.
“No, don’t wait for me. Just eat without me,” Ophelia replied, already heading for the elevator.
She and Ella had a meeting with Mr. Lawson tonight to finalize some project details. If everything went smoothly, they’d sign the contract. By the time she finished, dinner would be long over, so there was no point in making everyone wait for
her.
