Chapter 110
“Well, you do have a point,” Ophelia said, her eyes calm as she glanced around before landing on Layla. She nodded, looking almost approving. “So, you know your place and are leaving on your own?”
Ella couldn’t hold back her laughter. She shot Ophelia a thumbs-up, thinking, ‘Boss, that was savage!’
Layla tried to put her down, but with just a few words, Ophelia flipped the script and hit right back.
Right now, it was obvious, they were going in, Layla was heading out. It was clear who was out of their league.
Layla’s face went pale, but she kept up her best concerned face. “Ophelia, I’m really just trying to help you. Why are you so stubborn? If people find out your parents are cleaners, they’ll kick you out in no time. Wouldn’t that be humiliating?”
‘She got dumped by that man and still dares to act all cocky? Unbelievable, Ophelia thought, her resentment bubbling up inside.
Ophelia caught every change in Layla’s expression, her eyes brimming with contempt. ‘She is getting way too full of herself. Who does she think she is, talking to me like that?’ she thought, not even bothering to hide her disdain.
A cold glint flashed in Ophelia’s eyes, her voice sharp as a blade. “Layla, we’re not close. And I know you’re just embarrassed you grew up with cleaner parents, so stop harping on it.”
“What did you just say? Who’s the one with an inferiority complex here? It should be you! I was only raised by them, but they’re your real parents!” Layla shot back, her face going pale, then flushing with anger.
Ophelia’s words struck a raw nerve, and Layla couldn’t help but let her true, bitter side slip out for everyone to see.
“Tsk tsk, Boss, she still doesn’t get that your parents are loaded, not cleaners at all?” Ella said, shaking her head with a wicked grin, clearly enjoying herself.
“Honestly, she probably has no clue. There were a bunch of kids mixed up at the hospital back then, the actual cleaner’s daughter is someone else.”
Layla was stunned, her jaw dropping. “What? She’s not the cleaner’s kid?”
“No way!” Layla gasped, her eyes wide with shock. With her mask ripped off, all that was left on her face was raw resentment.
She’d always thought Ophelia was the one who’d have to go back and suffer in her place, and every time she saw Ophelia, it was like Ophelia was always the winner.
But now, she realized Ophelia wasn’t even that couple’s real daughter, and her real parents might actually be filthy rich! Thinking back to how Ophelia got invited to that exclusive party none of them could attend, and then left in a luxury car, Layla’s heart trembled with anxiety.
‘Wait, did Ophelia not only avoid hardship after leaving the Vossen family, but end up living an even better life than me?’ Layla thought, her mind reeling.
The bitterness in her heart made her stumble back two steps in shock.
But right then, Layla seemed to spot someone in the crowd and instantly switched to her damsel-in-distress mode, eyes reddening as she faked tears. “Ophelia, even if your parents are filthy rich, you can’t just walk all over me and act so arrogant, can you?”
Ella froze for a second, instinctively glancing at Ophelia. ‘Wait, what’s happening now?’ she wondered.
Ophelia’s lips curled into a cold, mocking smile. ‘Well, looks like the saintly act is kicking off, she thought.
Ella caught on right away. ‘Oh, time to sit back and watch the show,’ she thought, grinning.
Sure enough, the very next moment, Layla spun around with a miserable expression, sniffling loudly as she called out to someone behind them, “Dad, you finally showed up! Ophelia’s been picking on me!”
She sniffled again, looking like the world had just come crashing down on her.
“What happened?” Carneron Vossen stepped up to Layla, his eyes filled with worry. “Why are you crying?”
