136.Chapter 136
“Come sit over here,” Declan called out to Ophelia.
Ophelia blinked in surprise, her eyes going wide. ‘Wait, is this another setup from Connor?’ she wondered.
She gave Declan a careful once-over, feeling a wave of doubt rising inside.
Declan might seem polite and easygoing, but as the heir to a big family, he always carried that cold, distant air, a kind of natural authority that set him apart.
‘Would a guy like him really just blindly follow whatever his elders decide?’ Ophelia thought, not quite convinced.
Seeing Ophelia hesitate, Declan’s expression turned a bit uneasy. “If it’s inconvenient for you, feel free to sit somewhere else,” he offered.
Suddenly, it occurred to him, maybe he was being too forward, and Ophelia had misunderstood his intentions.
‘Otherwise, why would she be looking at me with that strange expression?’ Declan wondered.
Ophelia shook her head, her face returning to its usual calm and unfazed look. “No, anywhere’s fine.”
Ophelia took her seat, and Ruby nervously settled in right beside her, looking a bit anxious.
Ruby snuck a peek at Declan, and seeing he wasn’t bothered at all, she finally relaxed a little and tried her best to blend in, sitting quietly.
‘That’s Declan, after all. He might look like a nice guy, but he usually keeps everyone at arm’s length, Ruby thought.
‘And now he’s actually asking Ophelia to sit next to him? That’s basically unheard of around here, she added, still in disbelief.
People started whispering to each other, clearly surprised by Declan’s move.
But they kept their voices down and their actions subtle, so Ophelia didn’t even notice.

Ophelia shot Declan a cool, collected look and thanked him quietly, “I got the info you sent me. Tell Connor I appreciate it.”
Sitting here was exactly what she’d intended, it made chatting with Declan easy, so there was no need to track him down later.
“Grandpa?” Declan blinked in surprise. ‘Why’s she thanking my grandpa?’ he wondered.
But just then, Mr. Wells walked in, so Declan shoved his confusion aside and focused on the teacher, looking all business.
Ophelia didn’t overthink it. Asking Declan to pass along her thanks was her subtle way of telling Connor to stop with the matchmaking nonsense. She and Declan weren’t puppets,no way were they going to let anyone push them around.
Once class got underway, Mr. Wells went over the material, then started handing out the practice problems.
“These questions are a bit tricky, so don’t rush. Just take your time and think them through,” he said.
As soon as the papers landed, the whole class started groaning and gasping, everyone was freaking out.
Ophelia glanced at the practice problems, her eyes growing serious for a moment, but she was back to normal in no time.
Declan gave the test a quick once-over, thought it through, then got right to work.
For a while, only a handful of students were actually working on the problems, while the rest just sat there, looking totally lost and miserable.
Mr. Wells scanned the room, a satisfied glint in his eyes as he took in everyone’s reactions.
These kids were the school’s golden boys and girls, chosen to compete at nationals. They needed to be humbled a bit, there was always someone stronger, always a tougher challenge waiting out there.
But before long, Mr. Wells found his attention drawn to Ophelia and Declan, both locked in intense concentration.
Sitting side by side, their focus and mannerisms were eerily similar, each lost in thought, working through the problems with the same quiet determination.
Then, almost in perfect sync, they both picked up their pens and started writing again.
Mr. Wells arched an eyebrow, then couldn’t help but nod, clearly impressed.
