Ophelia Gets Thrown Out (Ophelia) novel Chapter 144

144.Chapter 144

“Just here to pick up my fiancée after school,” Alaric said, his voice cheerful and teasing. He was obviously in a great mood.

Ophelia shot him a warning glare. “Watch what you say. There’s nothing going on between us.”

“Oh?” Alaric’s lips curled into a teasing smirk. “Really? Because I could’ve sworn I just heard you say you were engaged, in front of everyone, no less.”

Ophelia froze. ‘Wait, he actually heard what I said earlier?’ she thought, her heart skipping a beat.

‘So that’s why his smile looked so annoyingly smug just now. I thought he was scheming something again, but it was just because of that?’ she wondered.

“Glad you finally owned up to being my fiancée in public, Ophelia. Don’t worry, I’ll do my job as your fiancé, picking you up after school, taking you out on dates…” Alaric said, his eyes sparkling with mischief.

Seeing that hopeful look on Alaric’s face, Ophelia couldn’t take it anymore. “Stop!”

“Alaric.” Ophelia took a deep breath, forcing herself to be patient. “Just say it, why are you really here?”

‘Spit it out or get lost, she thought.

Alaric just shrugged, all innocence. “Obviously, I’m here to pick you up, Ophelia.”

Ophelia gritted her teeth. ‘He’s seriously just here to get on my nerves, isn’t he?’ she thought.

“No need for the ride, Mr. Caldwell. I’ve got stuff to do, so I’m heading out,” Ophelia said, reaching for the car door, ready to get in.

She had plans with Ella, if she didn’t hurry, she’d be late.

“Ophelia, you really gonna just leave your fiancé here like this?” Alaric put on a wounded look, like if she said yes, his heart would shatter right then and there.

Ophelia’s lips twitched hard, and she could feel her temples throbbing.

“Alaric, seriously, enough already. Are you not even trying to keep up appearances anymore?” she snapped. ‘He really can put on a show no matter where he is, she thought.

Alaric reached up and touched his face, arching a brow with a playful smirk. “Ophelia, are you dissatisfied with my looks?” Watching him act all narcissistic, Ophelia rolled her eyes so hard it was a miracle they didn’t get stuck. ‘Why do I always feel like punching this guy?’ she grumbled to herself.

‘Was that what I meant?’ she wondered.

‘Seriously? Was that what I was saying?’ she thought, annoyed at herself.

Seeing Ophelia’s cheeks flush and her looking ready to explode, Alaric realized he’d better not push his luck. If she really snapped, he’d be in for it.

“Ophelia, you said you had something to do. What is it? Need me to help out?” For once, Alaric actually sounded genuinely serious.

“No thanks, I’m meeting someone,” Ophelia replied, her impatience barely hidden, she just wanted him gone.

Alaric raised an eyebrow, trying to play it cool. “Who are you meeting? Is it Declan?”

He didn’t even notice the jealous edge creeping into his own yoice.

Ophelia gave him a confused, slightly annoyed look. “Why would I want to meet him?”

“Oh, so it’s not Declan?” Alaric quickly backpedaled, picking up on her irritation. “I just saw something on the school forum and brought it up, that’s all.”

“How did you even see the forum?” Ophelia’s attention snapped to him, totally forgetting about Declan for the moment. A flicker of satisfaction crossed Alaric’s eyes. ‘Looks like she doesn’t care about Declan as much as I thought, he mused. The knot that had been weighing on his chest all afternoon finally loosened a bit, he felt a lot less suffocated.
